LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Sophomore Patjo Twagirayezu scored a career-high 22 points with nine rebounds to lead the Covenant men's basketball team past visiting Millsaps 63-56 on Friday night inside Barnes PE Center.
Covenant (4-2) snaps a brief two-game losing streak in the process, while Millsaps (1-5) falls for a second straight time.
Twagirayezu scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half as he helped the Scots hold off a rally from the visiting Majors. The sophomore finished 8-of-13 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds with three assists and a pair of steals. Twagirayezu was joined in double figure scoring by TJ Cox who poured in 18 points with five rebounds and two assists.
Covenant managed just 35.9 percent (23-of-64) shooting for the game, but forced Millsaps into 21 turnovers and converted those into 21 points. Millsaps connected on 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the field.
The Scots held a 34-26 lead at halftime on the strength of 10 points from Cox and 43.8 percent shooting. Covenant scored the first six points of the night as Twagirayezu had four early points and Bailey Spragg added a field goal. Covenant led by 10 at 30-20 after a Daniel Garrett layup with 3:09 left in the first before Millsaps trimmed the lead to eight at the half.
Millsaps made five of its first six shots to start the second half and gained a 39-38 lead on Marc Robertson's 3-pointer with 17:37 remaining. Covenant regained the lead for good at the 11:22 mark on a Twagirayezu triple that gave the Scots a 46-44 edge. Covenant withheld one last Millsaps rally attempt with under two minutes to play to seal the victory.
Robertson led the Majors with 11 points and eight rebounds. Blake Jones added 10 points and Alex Gerchow tallied five points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
Covenant also received contributions from Connor Sears with six points and Garrett with five off the bench.
