CLAREMONT, Calif. – Playing at home for the first time this season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team won both of its games at the annual David Wells Classic over the Thanksgiving weekend. CMS (5-2) defeated NAIA foe Bristol (Calif.) 65-63 on Nov. 27 and on the following day, ran away with a 64-43 victory over Carleton (Minn.) to push the team's win streak to five games.
CMS 65, Bristol 63 (Nov. 27)
Down by seven points with just over four minutes remaining in the game, the defense stepped up to help CMS earn the comeback win. With the score even at 63, Bristol had the ball with a chance to win, but CMS came up with the defensive stop. On CMS' next possession, sophomore guard Michael Scarlett (CMC) dished the ball off to sophomore forward Nicolas Segura (CMC) who scored on a reverse lay-up to give CMS the win.
Senior center Shelby Lane (CMC) posted a double-double, his fourth of the young season, with 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead CMS. Sophomore guard Joey Malgesini (CMC) added 13 points for CMS. Devontae Bryant put in a team-high 17 points for Bristol.
CMS shot 50 percent from the field in the game, but struggled from the free-throw line, shooting just 33 percent.
CMS 64, Carleton 43 (Nov. 28)
Against Carleton, it took CMS a few minutes to get going offensively as Carleton led 9-8 after a free throw by Tianen Chen with 14:44 left in the first half. After the point by Chen, CMS took charge, with a 19-0 run started by a basket from senior center Nick Lund (CMC). CMS held Carleton scoreless for 10 minutes during the run as they moved out to a 27-9 lead with 4:05 remaining in the first half.
During the 19-0 run, CMS caught fire from long range with four three-pointers, three of which came from freshman guard Evan Davis (CMC). Davis hit on 4-of-6 three-point attempts in the game for 12 points and was one of four CMS players in double-figure scoring. Malgesini tied David with a team-high 12 points while Lane and senior guard Jack Earley (CMC) each scored 11 points.
CMS limited Carleton to 33 percent shooting, including eight percent on three-pointers.
CMS is home on Dec. 2 against San Diego Christian and then has nearly a month in between games, next playing on Dec. 29 at Concordia. Conference play starts for CMS at home on Jan. 2 against La Verne.
