THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Basketball team fell short in a closely contested match against Vassar, 68-61, in Riesenberg Hall Gym on Tuesday evening.
Sophomore Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) led the Privateers with 17 points and six rebounds to go along with three assists on the night. Macdonald was 7-for-12 from the floor, doing most of his damage in the low post.
Sophomore John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and juniorIsaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) netted 12 and 11 points respectively in the loss. Junior Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) also had a strong performance going 3-for-3 from the field, including two threes, for 8 points on the night.
Freshman Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) contributed strong play on both ends of the floor with six assists and three points to go along with his stout outside defense.
The teams exchanged leads 14 total times. To start the game, Vassar hit a jump shot to go up 2-0 before Hoch answered with a three on the next possession for the lead. The half went back and forth with tie scores at seven, 14 and 16.
With 8:26 left in the half, Maritime went on a 7-0 run to make it 25-18, but Vassar answered right back with three consecutive baskets to tie the game at 25. The Privateers ended the half strong to end the half with a five point lead at 34-29.
Erikson Wasyl scored the first basket of the second half for two of his 19 points on the night. Vassar stormed back to tie the game at 42 with 12:34 left in the regulation.
With just over two minutes left in the game, the Brewers took the lead 59-58 and were able to keep the lead for the rest of the game. Vassar added free throws in the final minutes to push the final score to 68-61.
The Privateers fall to 0-4 on the season while Vassar improves to 2-2 with the win. Maritime's next game is Wednesday, December 2, at Lehman College at 7 p.m.
