No. 2 Marlins Suffer 71-60 Upset to Salisbury
SALISBURY, Md. -- The No. 2 ranked Virginia Wesleyan College men's basketball team suffered its second upset in the last 10 days as Salisbury University trailed for all of 15 seconds in Tuesday night's 71-60 non-conference decision.
The Marlins tied the Sea Gulls on three occasions in the first half, including 23-all as Nick Doyleconnected for a three-pointer. Salisbury answered with a layup by Jordan Brooks to retake the lead 25-23.
Keijon Honore cut the deficit back to one on a free throw at the 4:38 mark before Khory Moorenetted the Marlins their lone lead of the game, 26-25, on a layup with 4:17 left in the half. Rocky Harris would not let the lead last long as his layup 15 seconds later gave the edge back to Salisbury, a lead the Sea Gulls would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Despite shooting a similar percentage to the Sea Gulls (VWC - 41.5%, SU - 42.3%), the Sea Gulls committed just 11 turnovers while forcing the Marlins into making 22. Virginia Wesleyan held a 41-29 advantage in rebounds.
Corey White, Jr. had nine points and 11 rebounds while Moore and Honore each contributed 10 points.
Salisbury (5-0) was led by Gordon Jeter's 14 points as five Sea Gulls scored in double-figures. Harris finished with seven steals to go along with 10 points and four rebounds.
No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan (2-2) returns home for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener with Emory & Henry College Saturday at 2 p.m.
