GORHAM, Maine -- Mike Boornazian scored a game-high 26 points but the University of Southern Maine's offense was too much for the Bobcats in a 106-92 loss Tuesday night.
The Huskies (4-1) shot a blistering 60% (12-20) from three-point range and sprinted to a 51-32 halftime lead. Bates (2-1) matched their high octane pace, especially in the second half when the Bobcats actually out-scored USM 60-55. The Bobcats were 13-29 from three as both teams shot aggressively from the perimeter.
The 106 points scored by the Huskies is the most points the Bobcats have surrendered in one game since they allowed 111 points in an overtime loss to Tufts in 2002.
"USM shot the ball incredibly well," Bates head coach Jon Furbush said. "I am curious to see on film if it was because they were that open and we weren't playing good enough defense or if it was just their night. Maybe it was a combination of both but I am anxious to get back to the film room and see what the problem was."
Boornazian '16 (Portland, Conn.) shot 9-18 from the field and 3-6 from deep on the evening. He added four rebounds and three assists. Shawn Strickland '18 (Middletown, Conn.) scored 20 points for the Bobcats with a team-high four assists. He also pulled down five boards. Meanwhile Malcolm Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds while adding eight points.
All five starters for USM finished in double figures with Atencio Martin and Jose Novchanthavong leading the way with 21 points each. Overall USM shot 58.1% from the field.
Statistically the game ended up being fairly even with Bates out-rebounding USM and finishing the game with fewer turnovers.
But the early barrage from the Huskies put the Bobcats in a hole they simply could not dig themselves out of despite pulling to within 10 at one point in the second half.
Bates welcomes the University of New England to town on Sunday night for the Bobcats' home opener. Tip is set for 5:00.
