UMHB men top Southwestern 110-108 in overtime

Georgetown, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team stormed back in the final two minutes to send the game to overtime and then hit the game-winner with seven seconds left as the Cru topped Southwestern University 110-108 in overtime. UMHB improves to 2-0 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Pirates to 2-2 on the year.

 

Southwestern led 100-93 with 1:21 left in the game before UMHB rallied. Demarius Cress hit two free-throws with 1:11 remaining. The Cru forced a Pirate turnover that led to two free-throws from Daniel Mills. Southwestern missed two free-throws on the next trip down the court and Cress drilled a three-pointer with 23 seconds to go to tie the game at 100. The Pirates missed a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds as the game went to overtime. The two teams traded baskets until Southwestern built a 107-104 lead with 1:13 left. Back-to-back layups from Russell Green and Cress put UMHB up 108-107. Southwestern tied the game with a free-throw with 21 seconds to play. Mills buried a jumper with seven seconds remaining to give the Cru a 110-108 lead and Cress preserved the win with a steal on the final Pirate possession. Southwestern led 49-43 at halftime and by as many as 15 points in the second half before UMHB battled back.

 

Mills led the Cru with 29 points and Cress added 27. Green had 19 points and 11 rebounds for UMHB. The Cru 55 per cent from the field in the game and hit 7-18 from three-point range. UMHB also out rebounded Southwestern 46-36 in the victory.

 

Chris Molina topped Southwestern with 27 points and Connor Kim and Ryan Ogden added 21 points apiece. Ogden also pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds. The Pirates 48 per cent from the field and went 14-32 from beyond the arc.

 

The Cru will be off until December 3rd. UMHB will travel to Jackson, Mississippi that day to take on Belhaven University. The Cru's next home game comes December 5th with a non-conference tilt against Texas Lutheran University.
