Gettysburg Trips Men’s Basketball in Tip-Off Final

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (November 21, 2015) – Seniors John Snow and Jordan McDaniel each earned All-Tournament Team honors, but the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team was defeated by Gettysburg College by a score of 71-64 Saturday in the title game of the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament.

 

The Scarlet Raiders took a five-point lead into intermission and built an 11-point lead (50-39) midway through the second half, but the host Bullets came back late and ended the game on a 9-0 run for the win. Gettysburg moves to 2-1 on the season, while the Scarlet Raiders suffer their first defeat, falling to 2-1 as well. Rutgers-Newark will return to the hardwood Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener against New Jersey City University in The Golden Dome Arena.

 

Four Scarlet Raiders were in double figures, led by the 18 points, eight rebounds and two steals from Snow. Senior forward David Azoroh ended with 15 points and two rebounds, while sophomore guard Tyler Ofray had 12 points, three boards and two assists. McDaniel had 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocks as the Scarlet Raiders shot 42.6 percent (23-for-54) from the field, 1-for-6 from distance and 17-for-21 (81 percent) from three.

 

The Bullets took a brief lead early in the second after a three-pointer from Pete Christ, but a 7-0 run for Rutgers-Newark helped the Raiders to a 40-34 lead with 16:52 on the clock after a jumper from Azoroh. Gettysburg responded to get within three points (40-37), with the guests coming back to score eight in a row, punctuated by a steal from freshman guard George Elghoul and a fastbreak deuce from Snow to make it a 48-37 lead with just 13:19 on the clock.

 

Each side traded buckets, with the Bullets chipping away to get within five points (54-49) at the 6:29 mark, eventually taking a 62-60 lead when Christ hit another three-pointer. A McDaniel pair at the line, a stop and a Snow layup pushed the Scarlet Raiders back on top with 2:25 to play, but Gettysburg was able to hold the Rutgers-Newark offense at bay the rest of the way for the 71-64 win. Cam Stewart scored six of the final nine points in the game for Gettysburg.

 

R-N led by as many as eight points in the first half and never trailed, taking a 31-26 advantage at halftime.

 

England finished with 23 points and seven rebounds to lead the Bullets who shot22-for-50 (44 percent) from the field, 6-for-20 (30 percent) from deep and 21-for-33 (63.6 percent) at the line. Rutgers-Newark held a 37-31 edge on the glass, but was minus-five in the turnover battle (17-12).
