Anderson and Carithers Help Eagles Win Third Straight

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Cameron Anderson (Charlotteville, Va.) and Jared Carithers (Washington, D.C.) combined for 35 points as Green Mountain eked out a 72-71 win over John Jay on Saturday evening in men's basketball non-conference action at the Doghouse.

Green Mountain (3-1) squeaked out its third consecutive win by three points or less with the victory over the Bloodhounds. Anderson led the team with 18 points, four boards, three assists and four blocks, while Carithers contributed 17 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Sampson Dale (Charlottesville, Va.) popped in nine points in addition to his team-leading nine boards.

John Jay (0-3) remains without a victory to start the season letting a last second opportunity slip out of its hands. With the Eagles leading 72-71, GMC's Thomas Brown (Charlottesville, Va.) failed to convert on two free throws giving the hosts the chance to steal the victory. On the ensuing inbounds play, however, the Bloodhounds inadvertently stepped out of bounds on the inbound pass resulting in a turnover with just 0.6 seconds remaining.

The Eagles began the game by slipping out to an early 6-0 lead, but the Bloodhounds quickly recovered and the two teams see-sawed back-and-forth for the majority of the first half.  The Bloodhounds' David Morris hit a three-pointer with 2:44 remaining to give the hosts their largest lead of the game at 35-30. However, the Eagles would score the last six points of the half capped by Carithers' third three-pointer of the period to take a slim one-point lead into the break at 36-35.

Green Mountain would start to distance itself from the Bloodhounds as the second half progressed building up to its largest lead at 11 points with 6:43 remaining. As had happened in the previous game, the Eagles were unable to secure the large lead and allowed the hosts to slip back into the contest. The Bloodhounds narrowed the deficit to a single point several times down the stretch, but the 'bend, but don't break' defense of the Eagles did just enough to secure the win, with some luck on its side.

Green Mountain shot the ball as well as it had all season, making 50 percent of its shots from the field, including 47.4 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc. Holding the team back on this night was its worst mark of the season from the line as the Eagles converted on just 56.5 percent of its freebies.

Tonight's game was the second game this season in which Anderson has posted at least four blocks. The game also saw Pierce Weatherspoon (Wethersfield, Conn.) collect his first collegiate points on a perfect night from the field (3-of-3) for eight points in addition to his four rebounds.

Green Mountain will kick off its North Atlantic Conference schedule on Wednesday, December 2 when it travels to Colby-Sawyer to battle the Chargers at 7:30 p.m.
