Covenant downs Oglethorpe 82-69 to move to 3-0

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Berto Dryden scored 19 first half points, Chris Boyd recorded his second career double-double and TJ Cox added 17 points and eight assists to lead the Covenant men's basketball team to an 82-69 win at Oglethorpe on Saturday.

The victory keeps the Scots perfect on the year at 3-0. Covenant has scored 80 points in consecutive games and is averaging 78.3 points on the year. Oglethorpe drops to 1-2 overall.

Dryden was on fire in the opening half. The sophomore transfer went 5-of-5 from behind the 3-point line, including one as the half came to a close, and tallied 19 of his game-high 21 points in the period as Covenant built a 45-32 lead.

Boyd recorded a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. It's the second career double-double for the senior. Cox was also efficient as he produced 17 points, eight assists, five rebounds and zero turnovers on the night. 

Collectively, Covenant shot the ball well from the outside for a third straight game. The Scots made 50 percent (12-of-24) from behind the 3-point line and 47 percent (31-of-66) from the field. The Scots forced Oglethorpe into 13 turnovers and converted those into 15 points.

It was the play of Dryden that was key in building a first half lead. The Scots trailed for just a few moments in the opening half before going on an 8-0 run, capped by a Z Arima 3-pointer, to go ahead 11-4 with 16:58 left. Covenant extended its margin to 37-22 with 3:32 left in the half after a Ben Phelps triple. Dryden's fifth 3-pointer of the half put the Scots ahead 45-32 in the closing seconds of the half.

Covenant led by double-digits for nearly the entire second half and took its largest lead of the game at 65-48 after a Boyd jumper with 10:48 remaining. The Scots would cruise from there to remain perfect on the season.

Connor Smith led Oglethorpe with 17 points while Chris Lawrence had 13 in the losing effort. The host Stormy Petrels shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the floor with nine 3-pointers. 

Covenant also received nine points and a career-high five rebounds and five assists from Arima. Patjo Twagirayezu added eight points, four rebounds and three blocks while Connor Sears tallied seven points and four rebounds.
