RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Maritime men's basketball team dropped the final game of its 2014-15 season at the hands of the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins on Thursday evening by the score of 75-59 from the Peter Jay Sharp Center in Riverdale, N.Y.
Maritime was led by senior T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy), who finished the game with season-high 24 points, including 19 in the second half. Freshman Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) had 14 points on the night, for his second straight contest with 14, while sophomore Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) led the team with nine rebounds, and also had a pair of blocks on the night.
After Mount St. Vincent took an early 3-0 lead, MacDonald came back down the court and put back a missed shot for the first Privateer points of the evening. After a defensive rebound by sophomore Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) on the next Dolphin possession, MacDonald connected on a left-handed layup to put the Privateers up 4-3.
Maritime was able to tie the game at six and then again at eight as MacDonald and Gibson both sank layups. The Privateers evened up the game once more in the period at 13 as MacDonald made a baby-hook layup off a pass into the lane.
After the made Maritime basket, Mount St. Vincent rattled off 12 straight points to take a 25-13 lead. The run finally came to an end with 3:49 left in the half as senior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) connected on a pair of free throws. Freshman John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) knocked down a three-pointer with 3:34 left in the half, followed by a three-pointer by Gibson as time expired to make the score 21-37 heading into halftime.
In the second half, MacDonald began the scoring for the Privateers with a layup. Another run by the Dolphins gave the home team a 33-point lead with 12:48 to go in the game. Gibson got going again in the second half with a tip-in after missing his initial shot to get the Privateers back on track, freshman Tim McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep)then stepped back and knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing after taking a pass from sophomore Darien Bryan(Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching).
Following a turnover by the Dolphins, Hayes threw down a dunk off a long lead pass from Gibson. Hayes then followed up with a pair from the free throw line, sophomore Tim Hoch (Coventry, R.I./Fishers Island (N.Y.)) got in on the scoring action with a mid-range jumper, then knocked down a three-pointer from the right elbow to make the score 68-44 in favor of the Dolphins.
The next 12 Privateer points all came from Gibson, as he went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, then stepped back for a three-pointer with 2:23 left in the game. On the next Privateer possession, Hoch then found Gibson for yet another three-point basket to make the score 75-54.
Mount St. Vincent missed their next shot, as McQuail pulled down the defensive board, he then found Gibson with an outlet pass, who made a highlight-reel one-handed dunk to cap off his career at 1,045 points.
McQuail capped off the scoring for the night with a three-pointer to finish off the score at 75-59 in favor of Mount St. Vincent. For McQuail, he played a season-high 10 minutes and collected six points on a pair of three-point baskets.
With just over a minute remaining, Gibson was taken off the floor for the final time in his career after playing his full four seasons with Maritime.
Corley finished his career with 705 points as he ended the night with three on the game, and also had a pair of assists to give him 331 assists, and also finished his career with 173 steals in his three seasons with the Privateers.
Maritime finishes its season with a 6-19 record, while accumulating four wins in conference play and will look ahead towards the 2015-16 season. Mount St. Vincent will be the third seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament and will await the sixth seed, as the 4th, 5th, and 6th seeds in the tournament have yet to be determined.
