More news about: UW-Superior

The 2014-15 season is coming to a close for the Yellowjacket mens' basketball team and they were playing the role of "spoiler" on Valentine's Day Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.

This was an important game for the Titans in terms of making the playoffs, and they played like it. The Yellowjackets fell to the Titans, 70-58.

The Yellowjackets got off to a good start in the first half as they raced out to a quick 5-0 lead, with all five points coming from Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton). The Titans took over from there, though. UW-Oshkosh would respond by going on a 10-0 run to take a 10-5 lead with with 15:05 remaining in the first half. The Titans would extend their lead to 10 points, 21-11, on a layup by AJ Mueller with just under 10 minutes left.

The deficit would continue to mount for the Yellowjackets, as they entered the locker room at the half down 17 points, 40-23.

The deficit would grow to as much as 23 points in the second half. With the score 51-28, the Yellowjackets knew they were running out of time and chances to get back in the game. Over the next nine minutes, the Yellowjackets would cut into the Titans' lead, closing the gap to as little as 12 points with just under seven minutes remaining in the contest.

But the Titans would continue to hold the Yellowjackets at arms-length for the remainder of the game until time ran out.

Schradle was the Yellowjackets leading scorer with 17 points and eight rebounds. Caleb Burch (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) added 11 points and Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) finished with nine points.

The Yellowjackets shot 34.6 percent from the field while the Titans shot 48.2 percent.

The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 2-12 in the WIAC and 8-15 overall.

The Yellowjackets return home Wednesday, when they will host UW-Stout. The opening tip from The Mertz is set for 7 p.m.
