Shider's 17 Leads Anchormen Past Southern Maine, 65-44

Providence, R.I.-Freshman guard Roosevelt Shider (Meriden, CT) scored a game-high 17 points, on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor, to lead the Rhode Island College men's basketball to a decisive, 65-44, Little East Conference victory over Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at The Murray Center. 

The Anchormen (16-7, 8-4 LEC) took an early, 9-5 lead on a Shider three-pointer off a feed from senior forward Chris Burton (New Rochelle, NY) just 3:58 in to the first half.  

The Anchormen extended their lead to 11, 20-9, on a jumper by Shider with just under 10 minutes left in the half. The Huskies (5-18, 2-10 LEC) cut the deficit to four, 22-18, on a layup by junior center Ben Jackson (Houston, TX) with 5:10 left in the half. The Anchormen ratcheted up the defensive intensity down the stretch, extending their lead to seven, 30-23, entering the break. 

Rhode Island College opened the second half on a 19-6 run over the first 9:34 of the second half to open up a commanding, 49-29, advantage. The Huskies could only shrink their deficit down to 17 over the remainder of the half as the Anchormen cruised to the victory. 

The Anchormen outscored the Huskies, 18-0, on points off turnovers in the second half.  

Junior guard Jalen Lincoln (Nobleboro, ME) led the Huskies with eight points, while Jackson finished with six points, two blocks and two steals. The Huskies shot 38.5 percent (15-for-39) from the field, 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from three-point range and 72.7 percent (8-for-11) from the free throw line for the game. 

The Anchormen were led by Shider's 17 points, while Burton scored 12 points, handed out five assists, recorded four steals and registered two blocks. The Anchormen shot 43.1 percent (22-for-51) from the field and 33.3 percent (5-for-15) from three-point land and 69.6 percent (16-for-23) from the charity stripe as a team. 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at home against UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, Feb. 17 (7:30 p.m.).
