JACKSON, Miss. (Feb. 13, 2015) – Two free throws by Myles Moore gave Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Millsaps a 57-56 win over the Sewnaee men's basketball team Friday night inside the Hangar Dome.
With the Tigers ahead by one, 56-55, Millsaps took a timeout. Out of the break, Moore was sent to the line with 36 seconds left. After he made both free throws, seniorMarcellus Caldwell then missed a go-head jumper with five seconds remaining that ended the game.
Sewanee entered the game in first-place in the SAA standings. After the loss, the Tigers remain in the first, however Sewanee is now tied with Centre and Rhodes. All three conference schools have an 8-3 SAA record and have split their previous games with each other.
The game was close throughout. Overall, their were six ties and four lead changes. With Millsaps ahead by four, 28-24, to start the second half, Sewanee came out of the locker room strong.
The Tigers made their first three shots to pull to within one, 30-29, with 17:37 left. Millsaps would hold on to its lead until 11:32 mark when Caldwell tied the contest at 40-40 with a jumper.
The Majors answered back with a 10-5 run over the next six minutes. With 3:59 to play, Keshonn Carter sparked a Sewanee comeback. After making two free throws, Carter elevated for a dunk off a pass from Caldwell.
Then with 2:06 sophomore Brody Stone scored five straight points to pull Sewanee back to one, 55-54, with 1:35 to play. The Tigers would take the lead with less than a minutes remaining after Jorden Williams made two free throws. That would set up the final drama down the stretch.
Overall, both teams were even statistically. Sewanee made 44.4 percent of its attempts while Millsaps made 44.9 percent. The Tigers did manage to outrebound the Majors, 29-25.
Individually, Stone scored 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting. That was the most points for the Knoxville, Tenn., native since November 22. Williams also finished in double figures with 16 while Carter added 12.
Moore led Millsaps with 13 points.
Sewanee will look to stay in the SAA race with a 3:00 p.m. contest at Birmingham-Southern, Sunday.
