The Baruch College Bearcats clinched the CUNYAC regular season title and the top seed in the 2015 CUNYAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament with a difficult 66-62 home win over the Dolphins from the College of Staten Island on Friday night in the ARC Arena.
The win improves the team's record to 18-5 overall and 14-1 in the conference, while the Dolphins drop to 17-7 and 11-4 in conference.
The visiting Dolphins led throughout most of the first half shooting 46 percent to build a 31-29 halftime lead. The second half would be a different story as the Bearcats rallied and broke open a tie at 37 with a 7-0 run to lead 44-37 with 12:51 left.
The Dolphins battled back and managed to take a one point lead (53-52) on a layup by Kevon Brown with 6:22 remaining. That set up a tightly contested final stretch as the two teams were tied at 62 with 1:29 left.
Edward Roscignobroke open the tie with a driving layup to score for the lead with 13 seconds left.
The Dolphins went down court on their next possession, but missed and Granville Gittenswas fouled grabbing the rebound. He hit both free throws to seal the important four point win.
Gittens finished with 20 points and six rebounds to help keep the team undefeated at home (12-0). Roscigno totaled 17 points, four assists and four steals.
Ryan Markoehad 10 points and Chimaechi Ekekeugborgrabbed 11 rebounds in the victory.
Michael Tate led the Dolphins with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Prior to the game, the men's basketball team honored their three seniors Gittens, Brian McMahonand Joshua Gener.
The men's basketball team will return to action on Tuesday, February 17, with a 7:15 pm CUNYAC contest at Brooklyn College.
