Immaculata, PA – Keystone College's men's basketball battled their way to a key conference victory on Wednesday night, topping Immaculata University on the road in overtime, 95-87. The Giants, who were led by 23 points from Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East), improve to 8-14 on the season and 8-7 in Colonial States Athletic Conference play while the Mighty Macs slip to 10-12 overall and 8-7 in league action.
Keystone, Immaculata, Marywood University, and Centenary College sit in a four-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings after Wednesday night's action. The top six teams advance to the CSAC playoffs with the field to be determined in the next three games for each team over the next week.
Keystone, who defeated Immaculata 89-87 in the first meeting between the two teams on January 13th in La Plume, completed the regular season series sweep of the Mighty Macs by outscoring the hosts 14-6 in the overtime period.
Immaculata jumped out to an 18-10 lead over the first 5:35 of Wednesday night's contest before Keystone used a 14-2 run to build a 29-24 advantage with 6:47 remaining in the opening half. The Mighty Macs battled back to tie the game at 35-35 at the 3:35 mark, but the Giants were able to take a 38-37 edge into the halftime break after getting 22 points off the bench compared to just six for Immaculata.
Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) proved Keystone the spark they need off the bench in the first half and tallied 10 points, Bryan Williams (Rialto, CA/Rialto) netted seven points, and Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) added five points for the Giants, who shot 42.9 percent from the field in the period while going 4-9 from three-point range and 4-5 from the free throw line.
Roy Ferrell, Jr. recorded 18 points in the first half to pace the Mighty Macs, who shot 46.4 percent from the floor in the opening stanza while going 5-12 from beyond the arc and 6-7 from the stripe.
Keystone extended their lead to 14 points midway through the second half, but Immaculata gradually chipped away at the visitor's lead and eventually cut it to a single point with 4:35 left in regulation. The Giants managed to stay in front until the final six seconds when Ferrell, Jr. hit a pair of free throws that forced overtime after a potential game-winning shot by Keystone at the buzzer would not go.
The Mighty Macs scored the first field goal of the extra frame, but Keystone answered with the game's next 10 points to hold a 91-83 advantage with 1:02 remaining in overtime. Immaculata got a pair back from the free throw line before the Giants scored the game's next four points to build a 10-point advantage with 36 seconds left on the clock to ice the victory.
Candemeres finished with 23 points after a 9-12 performance from the floor including a 3-4 effort from downtown. The senior guard, who recorded 19 of his points in the second half and overtime, also dished out a team-leading five assists to go along with six rebounds. Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) netted 15 points while DaVaughn Roberts-Thomas (Port Arthur, TX/Silsbee) and Peeples contributed 13 points apiece for Keystone. Roberts-Thomas led the Giants with seven rebounds on the night while Peeples tied for the game-high with five assists to go along with three helpers in the contest for the visitors, who finished the evening hitting on 51.4 percent of their field goal attempts while going 11-22 from three-point range and 12-19 from the free throw line.
Immaculata's Roy Ferrell, Jr. led all scorers with 32 points in the loss while Mamadou Diakite added a double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ron Melton grabbed a game-high 12 boards for the Mighty Macs, who held a 50-43 edge in rebounding for the game and shot 38.5 percent from the floor for the game while going 32 percent from beyond the arc and 67.9 percent from the charity stripe.
Keystone returns home on Saturday afternoon for a crucial conference game against Rosemont College starting at 3:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Ravens edged the Giants 76-73 in the first meeting between the two squads on January 10th at Rosemont. Keystone will honor their six seniors prior to Saturday's game.
