OSWEGO, N.Y. – Despite shooting 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the free-throw line, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game to SUNY Oswego, 71-47, on Tuesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium.
 
The Lakers led from start to finish, shooting 43.1 percent (28-of-65) from the floor and 36 percent (9-of-25) from beyond the 3-point line. Oswego also capitalized off of turnovers, scoring 31 points off 20 Hawk giveaways, and held a 40-34 edge in rebounds.
 
New Paltz drops to 10-11 overall (8-6 SUNYAC) with the loss and visits SUNY Geneseo next on Friday, Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m. Oswego rises to 14-7 overall (10-4 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m.
 
The Hawks stayed relatively close in the early goings of the contest, with the Lakers jumping out to a 9-5 lead. An 11-0 Oswego run, however, ballooned the Laker advantage to 15. With the Lakers up 19, junior forward/centerAlex Perlman (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) scored five straight points for New Paltz in the final minute of the first half, but sophomore guard/forward Keith Tyson beat the buzzer with a layup to give the Lakers a 39-23 halftime lead.
 
Oswego controlled the momentum in the second half, too, leading by as many as 29 points en route to the victory. The high-water mark for the Hawks in the second stanza came late in the form of a 6-0 run, which was capped off by a made layup by sophomore center Taylor Mulvey (Rotterdam, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy).
 
Senior guard/forward Taylor Sowah (Bronx, N.Y./Miller Place) paced the Hawks with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Perlman netted 10 points, all of which were scored in the first half, coming off the bench.
 
For Oswego, junior guard Walter Sampson's 15 points led the way, with sophomore guard Brian Sortino and junior guard/forward Alex Rawa netting 13 and 12 points, respectively. Sampson dished out five assists, while junior guard Kyle Covley posted three blocks. Junior center Mark Candelario gr
