Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Trinity College men's basketball team won their second straight game on Sunday afternoon, topping Vassar, 52-44, in non-conference action at the Vassar Athletics & Fitness Center. With the win, the Bantams improve to 4-2 on the year, while the Brewers lost their third consecutive game to fall to 2-4.
The Bantams defense and rebounding both played a vital part in the victory as Trinity forced 14 turnovers, while holding Vassar to 33 percent shooting. The Bantams also outrebounded the hosts, 34-32. Trinity scored 10 points off turnovers and 10 second-chance points in the tilt. The play of the Trinity bench was stellar as the Bantams subs outscored the Brewers bench, 17-0.
Trinity was led offensively by junior guard Jaquann Starks (Hartford, Conn.) with a game-high 13 points to go with two rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Alex Conaway (New Haven, Conn.) was the other Bantam to score in double figures, netting 11 points to go with two blocks and five rebounds. Junior forward Shay Ajayi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) just missed a double-double, scoring nine points and pulling down nine boards. Off the bench, junior guard Rick Naylor (Sudbury, Vt.) provided a spark for Trinity, scoring eight points to go with a team-high three assists.
To open the game the two squads traded the first 22 points as a layup by Trinity sophomore center Ed Ogundeko (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied the game at 11 midway through the first half. From there, the Bantams answered with a 15-6 run to build a game-high nine-point advantage. With a little over one minute remaining in the first half, Vassar pulled with seven after a jumper as the Bantams entered halftime with a 26-19 lead.
In the second half, Trinity never trailed as they maintained an advantage between five and nine throughout the remainder of the contest.
Trinity shot 37 percent from the field and knocked down 7-of-14 three-point attempts.
Trinity returns to action with a midweek contest versus Springfield on Wednesday, Dec. 3, inside Oosting Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
