GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A 19-2 run as part of a big second half keyed Gwynedd Mercy's 85-62 win over Rosemont Saturday at the Griffin Complex for the Griffin's fourth win in a row.
After shooting 38% in the first 20 minutes, Gwynedd turned it up a notch, going a solid 58% (21-of-36) in the second along with a defensive approach that forced 13 turnovers in the stanza.
Sophomore Cedric Elleby totaled 18 points and 16 rebounds, both game highs, for his third double double on the season. Senior Justin Knight added 13 points, six boards, four assists, and four steals as the Griffins (13-6, 8-4 CSAC) avenged an overtime loss to the Ravens back in December.
In the first, Gwynedd would put together an early stretch to up 15-5. But it was the Ravens who responded, going on a 14-0 run over the next four-plus minutes to take the lead. Knight's bucket and ensuing free throw would tie the contest at 20-20, keying a seven-point run. Rosemont closed the period with six-straight points to cut the GM lead to 31-30 at the break.
The second half saw the Griffin defense press and come up with five turnovers in the first two-plus minutes, which led to 11 points. With a lead of 47-38 with 16:58 to go, Gwynedd put the game out of reach with a 19-2 run over the next six minutes to up the advantage to 66-40.
Clayton Wolfe (12 points) and Marcus Thomas (11 points) were the only players to hit double figures for the Ravens (10-9, 8-4 CSAC). As a team, Rosemont was 20-of-48 (41%) for the contest.
Junior Julian Hyden tallied 15 points, five caroms, and three assists while junior Brian Hennessey and sophomore Larry Jones III each chipped in 11. The Griffins would hold a 41-24 rebound edge while totaling a season-high 17 steals.
Gwynedd Mercy plays at Keystone on Wednesday in CSAC action starting at 7 p.m.
