No. 3 Marietta breezes by Muskingum 93-77

MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 3 ranked Marietta College easily dispatched rival Muskingum University by the score of 93-77 Wednesday (Jan. 28) evening in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers remain perfect on the season at 18-0, 11-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Fighting Muskies fall to 5-13 overall and 2-9 in the OAC.

A three-pointer from Joshua Glass gave Muskingum its only lead of the game, 7-6, three minutes into the first half. Marietta responded with a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes to go in front, 21-11, with 9:45 left in the opening period.

The Pioneers led by as many as 21 points in the first half and took a 45-29 lead into the break. Marietta shot 56%, while Muskingum struggled from the floor hitting only 31% of its shot attempts.

It was much of the same in the second half. Marietta extended its lead to 30 points in the early going. However, the Muskies used a 15-2 run to cut the lead to 17 points, 69-52, with 8:54 left in the game.

Following a 30-second timeout, the Pioneers quickly pushed the margin back to 26 points. Marietta cleared its bench the final four minutes as 14 different Pioneers scored in the game.

Marietta got 52 points from its bench tonight. A.J. Ireland and A.J. Edwards came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 13 points each. Luis Garcia and Garrett Stephenson both scored 12 points and Eddy Grenert added 10. Stephenson and Grenert grabbed eight and six rebounds, respectively.

Glass led all scorers with 17 points. Rickey Wilson finished with 14 points and Jacob Geller added 11. Cody Seller had a team-best seven rebounds.

For the game, Marietta shot 55.9% (38-of-68) from the floor, 31.8% (7-of-22) from three-point range and 76.9% (10-of-13) from the free throw line. Muskingum was 28-of-68 (41.2%) from the floor, 8-of-18 (44.4%) behind the arc and 13-of-20 (65.0%) at the line.

Muskingum outrebounded the Pioneers 40-37. The Muskies committed 14 turnovers, while Marietta had 11.

Marietta hosts Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday (Jan. 31) at 3:00 p.m. contest.
