Fast Start Pushes No. 20 Babson Past MIT, 61-48

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Sophomore Joey Flannery (Acton, Mass.) led four players in double figures with 17 points, and 20th-ranked Babson College opened the game with a 23-6 run en route to a 61-48 victory over MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Rockwell Cage.

With its second consecutive win, Babson moves to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while MIT, which suffered its first NEWMAC loss, drops to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in the league.

Flannery finished 7-of-15 from the floor, added three rebounds and tied for game-high honors with three assists for the Beavers. Senior Eric Dean (Gilford, N.H.) had 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go along with five rebounds, classmate John Wickey (Manchester, N.H.) added 10 points and eight boards, and sophomore Sam Bohmiller (Franklin, Mass.) contributed 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting in the win.

Junior Ryan Frankel (New York, N.Y.) led all scorers with 18 points to lead the Engineers. Senior Matt Redfield (Los Altos, Calif.) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Andrew Acker (Merion Station, Pa.) added eight points and a game-high nine boards in the loss.

The Green and White held MIT to just two field goals over the first 12 minutes, and used an 11-0 run to open up a 17-point first-half lead. Leading 14-6 following a pair of free throws by Wickey, the Beavers got consecutive layups rom Flannery and sophomore Matthew Droney (Canton, Mass.), and a trey from Bohmiller before Wickey capped the run with another layup to make it 23-6 with 8:04 to go in the stanza.

The Engineers scored six straight points to pull within 23-12 on a hoop by Acker, but Dean responded with five quick points to push the Babson lead back to 16. The hosts again cut their deficit to 11 on a three-pointer by Frankel with 1:20 left in the period, but the Green and White grabbed three offensive rebounds on its next possession before Flannery drained a three of his own to take a 31-19 lead into the locker room.

MIT got as close as eight at 34-26 on a free throw by Acker with 14:37 to go in the game, but the Beavers responded by outscoring the hosts 20-8 over the next 7:43 to build a 20-point advantage. A pair of three-point plays by Flannery gave the Green and White a 44-30 lead with 11:27 to play, and a three-pointer by Dean, followed by back-to-back hoops from Wickey and first-year Bradley Jacks (Fort Washington, Md.) made it 54-34 with 6:54 remaining in the contest.

Babson shot 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the floor and outscored the Engineers 30-18 in the paint. The Beavers also held a 34-32 edge on the glass.

MIT was held to just 34 percent (17-of-50) from the floor, and went just 2-of-15 from beyond the arc.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Coast Guard at 3 p.m., while MIT will visit Emerson for a 1 p.m. tip-off.

GAME NOTES: Babson is now 48-19 all-time against MIT and has won each of the last three meetings by double figures…the Beavers are 6-0 on the road this season and have won seven consecutive conference road games going back to last winter…Babson is 9-1 when leading at halftime and 13-1 this season when outrebounding its foes…the Beavers are 12-0 when scoring at least 60 points this season, and have won 20 straight games when holding its opponent under 50 points.
