(GROVE CITY, Pa.) – The Thomas More College men's basketball team shot 50 percent from the field tonight (Tuesday, January 20, 2015) as it defeats Grove City College, 79-46, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Grove City College Arena in Grove City, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Saints improve to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the PAC. With the loss, the Wolverines fall to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the PAC.
Grove City jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with 16:13 to play in the first half when Mitch Marmelstein made a three-pointer. Thomas More answered with a 14-5 lead capped by a three-pointer by freshman guard Daniel Williams (Louisville, Ky./Jeffersontown) to take a 14-9 lead with 13:03 to play in the opening half. The Wolverines used a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 16-15 when Brian Giesler made a lay-up with 6:33 to play in the half. The Saints went on a 15-6 run to increase the lead to 31-21 with 1:39 to play in the first half when sophomore forward Bryson Walsh (Florence, Ky./Ryle) made a lay-up. Grove City closed out the half on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 33-26 at halftime.
Thomas More out-scored Grove City 46-20 in the second half to cruise to the 79-46 victory. In the game, the Saints had a 50 field goal percentage (28-of-56), including 47.5 percent from behind the three-point arc (19-of-40).
Sophomore guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) led all scorers with 22 points, while senior forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) joined in double-figure scoring with 10 points. Sophomore guard Sawyer Pauly (Crescent Springs, Ky./Covington Catholic) led the team on the boards with five rebounds. Sophomore guard Drew Mays (Union, Ky./Ryle) led the team in assists with seven, while Mumford dished out seven.
Thomas More opens the second half of the PAC schedule on Saturday (January 24) when it hosts Waynesburg University. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
