Dolphins Hang On For Overtime Victory Against Mount Saint Mary

Riverdale, N.Y. – Freshman Ammad Alkhulaidi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted his team leading fourth double-double and classmate Jamir Ferebee (Staten Island, N.Y.) led four players in double-figures with 16 points on Saturday as the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team snapped a three game skid, holding off Mount Saint Mary 74-67 in overtime.

 

Tightly contested throughout, the first double-digit lead of the game came with under a half minute to play in the overtime period when Andrew Curiel (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a free-throw to push the Mount in front 74-64 with 24 seconds left in the extra frame.

 

The Dolphins outscored Mount Saint Vincent 15-8 in the extra period, going 8-for-11 from the free-throw line and 3-for-6 from the field. Alkhulaidi paced the Dolphins with six points in the extra session.

 

Prior to extending the advantage to 10 points in the overtime period, the Mount's largest lead of the game came when Ferebee converted a layup with just over six minutes left in regulation time to push the Dolphins in front 48-40.

 

Over the final six minutes of regulation time, Mount Saint Mary would go 5-for-6 from three-point range to get the game tied at 59-59. Daniel Wolff scored 15 points over that stretch, knocking in four three-point field goals, including the triple that knotted the score with five seconds left in regulation.

 

Wolff scored all 15 of his second half points in the six minute window late in the second half and the Knights shot 52.2-percent overall and 70.0-percent from three-point range after halftime to get the game into overtime. Gerard Nocera also had a strong second half for the visitors, netting 11 points.

 

Before shooting 41.9-percent from the field in the second half, Mount Saint Vincent was held to a 9-for-34 effort from the floor in the first half. The Dolphins built a five point halftime lead by hitting four three-point field goals in the opening 20 minutes and outscoring Mount Saint Mary 11-0 off of turnovers.

 

Mount Saint Vincent rounded out the game turning the ball over 11 times, matching the second lowest total of the season. The visiting Knights were only able to manage three points off of Dolphin miscues in the contest and were outscored 17-9 in second chance points after allowing 15 offensive rebounds to the Dolphins.

 

Alkhulaidi reached double-figures in scoring for the second straight game after going 6-for-14 from the floor. He rounded out a strong all-around game with a game-high 12 rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots and four steals.

 

Ferebee came up one point shy of his career-high after going 5-for-12, including a pair of three-pointers, from the floor to go along with six boards and four steals. Khalil Shorter (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Kyle Beckmann (New City, N.Y.) each came off the bench to score 10 points, with Beckmann knocking down three triples.

 

Making his second straight start, Curiel gave the Dolphins nine points and nine rebounds and Madison Martinez (Atlanta, Ga.) closed the day with seven points and a pair of assists.

 

Wolff led all players in the game with 26 points, going 10-for-18 overall and 5-for-6 from three-point range in the game. He added nine rebounds and a pair of assists. Nocera finished up with 17 points and Alex Smith grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

 

Saturday's win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 9-5 overall on the season and to 5-2 in league play. The Dolphins will be back in action again on January 22 when they travel to Yeshiva. Tip-off with the Maccabees is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
