FARMVILLE, Va. - Junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) scored a career-high 18 off the bench and freshman Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) added a career-best 17 in his first collegiate start as the No. 16 Randolph-Macon men's basketball team thumped Hampden-Sydney 77-55 Wednesday evening in ODAC action for its ninth straight victory.
Moore was 7 for 8 from the floor and 3 for 3 on three-pointers for the first-place Yellow Jackets (12-2, 5-0 ODAC). Silverthorn went 6 for 12 from the floor and 5 for 10 on treys. Moore tied his career-high with three treys, while Silverthorn recorded a career-best five three-pointers.
After the Tigers (10-4, 3-2 ODAC) scored the first bucket of the contest, Silverthorn nailed three treys to spark an 11-0 run. H-SC cut the deficit to three at 11-8 before the Yellow Jackets scored eight straight to take a 19-8 advantage with 9:30 left in the half. The Tigers cut the margin to six at 22-16 before an 11-2 spurt gave R-MC a 33-18 lead with 1:30 remaining in the period. H-SC hit four free throws in the final minute to trail 33-22 at the break. The Yellow Jacket defense held the Tigers without a field goal over the final 6:45 of the period. H-SC hit just 6 of 32 from the floor for 18.8%. Silverthorn hit a career-high five three-pointers and scored 15 points.
R-MC started the second half on a 17-10 spurt to take a 50-32 lead with 12:48 left. The Tigers cut the margin to nine at 52-43 with eight minutes remaining. The Yellow Jackets used a 13-2 run to take a 65-45 lead, as Moore nailed a pair of treys, added a tap-in and a dunk in the run. R-MC finished the game on a 25-12 run over the final eight minutes to claim the 77-55 win.
Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) scored 11 for R-MC.
R-MC hit 14 three-pointers, the fourth time over the past seven games the Yellow Jackets have nailed at least 14 treys in a contest.
Jake Duncan led the Tigers with 11 points.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Jan.17 at 2 p.m. in an ODAC contest at Roanoke.
