Hood Falls in Commonwealth Conference Action

FREDERICK, Md. - Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) scored a game-high 20 points, but Hood fell victim to a second half surge by Stevenson in a 69-61 loss at BB&T Arena.

Hill hit 8-of-16 field goals and went 3-of-7 from 3-point range. The junior was one of three Blazers with three assists in the contest. 

Chris Cook (Mechanicsville, Va. / Lee-Davis) scored 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting. James Brown (Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Country Day) added 11 points and had five rebounds. Trevor Magnuski (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) grabbed seven rebounds and Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) had four steals and two blocks. 

Cook and Corey Martin (Glen Burnie, Md. / North County) accounted for all the scoring in a 9-0 run that built the Blazers a 20-10 lead with 9:36 left in the first half. Hood still led 24-16 before a 10-1 run down the stretch sent the Mustangs into the locker room ahead 26-25. 

Three straight 3-point field goals by Hood made it 34-28 early in the second half. Stevenson pulled within 36-34, but six straight points by Hill started a 13-3 run for the Blazers that resulted in a 49-37 advantage with 13:05 to play. 

After Martin's three to cap the run, Hood's offense went cold and the Mustangs were able to put together a game-changing run, taking a 56-49 edge with 7:23 remaining. Back-to-back buckets by Hill and a field goal by Brown pulled the Blazers within one point, 56-55, with six minutes to go. Scores by Colby Giacubeno and Erik Fisher stretched the Stevenson lead back to five. 

Hood held a 38-37 rebounding advantage. The Blazers were just 8-of-16 at the free throw line, but Stevenson missed its first nine foul shots and struggled to a 7-of-19 mark for the evening. 

Christian Roberts led the Mustangs with 18 points. Giacubeno scored 12 of his 14 in the second half, including eight straight points during Stevenson's second half run. Fisher added 13 points. Darius Walker filled up the box score with 10 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks. 

Stevenson shot 49 percent from the field. 

The loss dropped the Blazers to 7-8 on the season and 3-3 in the conference. Stevenson improved to 10-5 overall and tied Hood's 3-3 mark in the Commonwealth Conference.

The Blazers will look to get back in the win column on Saturday, January 17 3 p.m.
