(Chestertown, Md.) – The #4-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team held off a late run to post an 88-81 win at Washington College on Wednesday night. The Red Devils improve to 11-1 on the season and 4-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Ted Hinnenkamp led the way with a game-high 29 points, hitting 8-of-11 field-goals and 13-of-15 free throws. He added six rebounds and handed out four assists as well.
Senior Steve Collins put the Devils on the board with a three-point play and junior Brandon Angradi hit a jumper for an early 5-4 lead.
The Shoremen hit a pair of three-pointers to pull in front, 12-11. Angradi dropped another field-goal and Hinnenkamp connected with Robert Picka on a nice fast break for a 15-12 lead. Picka struck again before the Shoremen countered with a quick lay-up.
Angradi was on the floor with four first-years, and hit another jumper to stretch the lead to 19-14, at the midpoint of the half. Justus Melton and Moses Romocki countered a Washington field-goal with a pair of lay-ups, and Romocki added two free throws for a 25-16 advantage.
Tas Dixon converted four throws to cut the lead to five. Hinnenkamp made a strong move to the basket, matching a Washington three-pointer to make the scored 27-23. Chris Cox sank a free throw and Pete Yingst grabbed a pair of defensive rebounds as the scoring slowed until a 5-0 run put the Devils up by 10.
Picka tipped-in a lay-up and Yingst buried a three-pointer from the corner for a 33-23 lead. Washington answered with a 5-0 run before Hinnenkamp scored to end the half with Dickinson on top, 35-28.
Cox scored three points, adding four rebounds and a pair of assists in the first half. Yingst controlled four rebounds as well while Hinnenkamp led the way with eight points.
Angradi triggered a strong start for the Devils, driving in for a basket, grabbing a rebound and finding Hinnenkamp with a great pass underneath. Hinnenkamp was fouled and hit both free throws. He scored on a finger roll to stretch the margin to 13, early in the second half.
A Washington three-pointer made the score, 45-35, with 16:05 remaining in the game. Pat Morgan knocked down a three-pointer and Dave Knox cut the lead to five with a pair of free throws. Dixon hit his sixth free throw to cut the deficit to 45-41. Romocki drew his second charge of the game and Hinnenkamp converted a pair of free throws before Romocki traded lay-ups with the Shoremen for a 49-43 advantage.
Washington cut the lead to four, and trailed 54-50 with 7:04 on the clock. Hinnenkamp made a strong move in the post and converted a three-point play after a Red Devil steal to put Dickinson back in front by nine, 59-50. Angradi added a three-pointer to stretch the margin to 12, with just under six minutes to play.
Hinnenkamp made a nice cut and lay-up to give the Devils a 68-59 advantage with 3:51 to play. He tipped the ball away on the other end and Yingst was fouled, adding a pair of free throws. Hinnenkamp controlled the defensive rebound and was fouled again. He hit one of two to make the score, 71-59, with just over three minutes to play.
Washington quickly answered with a basket and called timeout, trailing by 10. James Drury converted a three point play and scored after a pair of Angradi free throws to trail by seven with two minutes remaining.
Yingst made it nine once again, hitting two more free throws for the Devils. Drury capitalized on a foul and Hinnenkamp was called for a charge, giving the ball back to the Shoremen. Sean Flanigan knocked down a jumper from the foul line to make it a five point game.
Washington fouled Hinnenkamp immediately, at the 1:06 mark. He hit both for a 77-70 lead. Angradi controlled the defensive rebound and he was fouled with 54 seconds on the clock. Angradi hit one-of-two, but Drury would answer with two more free throws for Washington.
The Shoremen started getting hot from the three-point line, trying to claw back into the game by sending the Devils to the line. Dickinson was solid from the stripe, finishing with an 88-81 decision. Washington sank a trio of three-pointers in the final 40 seconds but the Red Devils drained 13-of-14 from the line in the final 1:06 to secure the win.
Hinnenkamp led the way with his game-high 29 points. Angradi reached double-figures with 18 points, adding seven rebounds and pair of assists. He went 7-for-8 from the line as the Red Devils finished 34-39 from the line as a team.
Yingst went 6-for-6 from the line, adding a three-pointer for nine points. Romocki had a strong outing, scoring eight points to go with three assists, three steals and a pair of drawn charges. Picka finished with eight points and six rebounds. Cox led the Devils with eight rebounds, scoring seven points to match Collins in the scoring column.
Drury led Washington (1-11, 1-4) with 20 points while Knox recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Red Devils return home to face Ursinus College on Saturday. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
