More news about: Babson

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Senior John Wickey (Manchester, N.H.) scored a game-high 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, and classmate Eric Dean (Gilford, N.H.) recorded his third double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 11 boards as 15th-ranked Babson held off Springfield College, 59-56, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Blake Arena.

With its 11th straight victory, Babson is now 12-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Springfield drops to 8-5 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

Senior David Mack (Holden, Mass.) added season highs of 13 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Joey Flannery (Acton, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points, four boards and three assists for the Beavers.

Senior Nick Sinkiewicz (Cranston, R.I.) scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the second half to lead the Pride. Senior Sean Martin (Rindge, N.H.) chipped in with 11 points, eight steals, six assists and five rebounds, while junior Josh Downes (East Sandwich, Mass.) contributed 11 points and three boards.

Springfield made 10 of its first 15 shots, including a trio of three-pointers to take its biggest lead of the game at 27-15 on a hoop by first-year Brandon Eckles (East Greenwich, R.I.) with 10:17 left in the opening period. The Green and White responded with a 12-3 run, getting seven points from Mack, to cut its deficit to just 30-27 with 3:37 to go in the half.

A layup by Martin put the Pride back in front by five, but Babson scored seven straight points, five of which came at the free throw line, to take its first lead at 34-32 before a pair of Martin free throws with three seconds left tied the game going to the locker room.

The second half opened with five ties and two lead changes before the Beavers ripped off a 12-1 run to build a nine-point lead. Trailing 45-43, Dean and Wickey buried back-to-back three-pointers to take the lead for good. A free throw by Martin cut the Springfield deficit to three, but a hoop by Wickey followed by consecutive layups from Mack made it 55-46 with 9:50 to play.

Both teams struggled to score over the final 10 minutes as Martin made the only two field goals for either team. Sinkiewicz drained a pair from the line to cut the Babson lead to five with 5:54 left, but Flannery answered with two free throws of his own to make it 57-50 with 4:04 to go.  The Pride cut its deficit to 57-54 on two free throws by Downes with 2:54 remaining, and but both Sinkiewicz and Downes missed potential game-tying trifectas over the final two minutes.

Following a turnover, Martin hit a driving layup to cut the Beavers advantage to 57-56 with eight seconds left. Dean calmly knocked down two free throws with six seconds to go and Martin's game-tying three-pointer bounced off the back rim as time expired to secure the win.

The Green and White overcame a season-high 25 turnovers by shooting 46.3 percent (19-of-41) from the floor and 81 percent (17-of-21) from the free throw line. The Beavers also held a 41-22 edge on the glass and outscored Springfield 30-20 in the paint.

The Pride shot just 32.9 percent (19-of-58) from the floor, including a 4-of-20 effort from three-point range, and made just nine of their final 43 shots after the hot start.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as Babson hosts seventh-ranked WPI, while Springfield travels to Wheaton.
