Arlington, Va. – Quite the CAC duel unfolded on Saturday afternoon, though it was Marymount that scooted past Frostburg State, 73-66, when the final buzzer sounded. The Saints improve to 11-2 on the season and remain atop CAC standings with a 5-1 record in league play.
The first half proved a quick-hitting tug-of-war. Though the Saints began with an uncontested five-point run from Michael Anderson, the Bobcats – apparently determined to outdo the host – responded with a six-point run to swipe the early lead, 6-5. From there, the to-and-fro persisted and the squads battled shot-for-shot.
A jumper from Jesse Konadu and a subsequent triple from D'Ondre Stockman put the Saints up six, 17-11, at the 11:59 mark – and suddenly a scoreless drought struck and swallowed the next three minutes of play.
While Marymount maintained the lead for the frame's duration, the Saints could not put the Bobcats away. Frostburg State remained quite relevant, cutting the deficit down to two on multiple occasions over the last ten minutes. The last surge came with 57 seconds showing, when Bobcats' Torrell Goodman drove in a layup to settle the score at 27-25 heading into the break.
Much like the first half, Anderson sunk a triple out of the gate to kick off the second frame. Alex Danko followed with a pair of free throws to increase the Marymount advantage to seven, 32-25, at just the 18:32 mark.
A snappy 6-0 run from the Bobcats, however, saw the lead switch hands for the first time since early in the first half, as the visitors now topped the Saints, 33-32. Konadu responded with a three-pointer and a layup to steal back the advantage, and another Anderson bucket from beyond the arc would put Marymount up five, 40-35, with 14:38 left to play.
The game-long pattern continued, however, and Frostburg State closed the gap to two just moments later. Even when the Saints jumped out to another five-point lead, the Bobcats inched back within one, 45-44, with 10:26 showing.
Frostburg State would tie the contest, 47-47, less than a minute later, though the Saints would never relinquish the lead. In fact, the Bobcats would battle back to knot the score three more times before the clock ran out, but – thanks in large part to a 14-7 Marymount run over the final four minutes – never took the lead away from the Saints.
Stockman led all scorers with 17 points on the day – 12 of which came in the second half. Anderson and Konadu each chipped in 13 points, while JC Hoellich registered his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday night as it travels to Salisbury for a midweek CAC tilt. Tip time is set for 8 p.m.
