PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) hit 10-of-13 shots from the field in netting a career-high 28 points to lead the Manhattanville College men's basketball team to a 83-73 victory over John Jay College in a non-conference matchup at Kennedy Gymnasium on Saturday night.
Camacho was very efficient in picking up his fourth 20-point game of the season and also grabbed a team- and career-high 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double. He was helped along by classmate Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go with five assists and four steals, and freshman Timmy McCauley (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) with nine points and four boards.
The Valiants managed to overcome a big night from John Jay's Kris Owens, who led all scorers with 31 points (12-of-24 shooting) and added nine rebounds. Darell Robinson also added 19 points and seven assists for the Bloodhounds as well.
Manhattanville (5-8) took control of the game early thanks to a 10-0 run that put the home team ahead 12-4 seven minutes into the contest. The lead grew to 10 points when Maestre sunk a three to make it a 20-10 score at the midway point of the half, but John Jay (2-12) came back with a 13-4 run to get within one less than four minutes later.
However, the Valiants responded with eight straight points of their own to help take a 40-32 lead into the break. Camacho led all scorers with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting at halftime, as the Valiants shot 45.2 percent (14 of 31) as a team over the first 20 minutes.
Manhattanville came out strong to start the second half, scoring 10 of the first 12 points to open up a game-high 16-point lead (50-34) with 15:26 left following a Maestre three-pointer. John Jay did not go away quietly, however, getting the lead down to just four points at 61-57 with 9:02 on the clock, but the Valiants responded yet again with a 10-2 run that quickly got the lead back to 12 with 7:18 left and the home team coasted from there.
The Valiants had their second-best shooting night of the season in the win, hitting 28 of 58 attempts (48.3 percent) from the field in addition to 40.0 percent (8 of 20) from beyond the arc. John Jay took 14 more shots but made only four more, finishing the night at 44.4 percent (32 for 72) from the field.
One of the differences for the game came from the line, where Manhattanville went 19 of 26 (73.1 percent) while John Jay only hit 5 of 14 attempts (35.7 percent). Led by McCauley's nine, the Valiant bench also outscored their John Jay counterparts by a 23-2 margin on the night.
The Valiants will look to keep the momentum going on Wednesday, when the team plays the first of 12 straight Freedom Conference games to conclude the regular season against preseason favorite Delaware Valley beginning at 8 p.m. at Kennedy Gym.
