ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Junior Brandon Motzel scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds Saturday as Augustana cruised to an 88-51 win over North Park at Carver Center. The Rock Island-based Vikings moved to 13-1 on the season and 3-0 in the CCIW, while their namesakes from Chicago fell to 8-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.
The hosts left no doubt in this one. Junior point guard Hunter Hill had seven points as Augustana bolted to a 17-3 lead after five and a half minutes. A three-pointer and a pair of free throws by North Park's Colin Lake whittled the deficit under double digits for the last time at 21-12 with 12:28 to play in the first half, but treys by Mark Roth on the next three possessions gave Augustana a 30-12 lead.
The margin reached 20 (32-12) on a Motzel put-back with 10:17 left in the half before another Lake three ended an 11-0 Augustana run. Two free throws from junior Griffin Pils gave the hosts a 47-21 lead, their biggest of the opening stanza, but North Park's Juwan Henry got a friendly bounce on a three-point attempt with 27 seconds left to cut the halftime margin to 47-24.
The lead continued to grow after intermission, with a Dylan Sortillo three-pointer pushing it over 30 (60-29) for the first time with 14:49 to play. Coach Grey Giovanine had cleared his entire bench by the 6:25 mark. A short jumper by senior Alex Dziagwa with 48 seconds to play gave the hosts their biggest lead of the night at 88-49 before North Park put in a field goal to account for the final.
While Motzel was the only Augustana player to score in double figures, Giovanine got great balance behind him. Roth, Hill and sophomore Michael Hoekstra each scored nine, senior Danielius Jurgutis and junior Ben Ryan had eight apiece, Sortillo seven and Dziagwa and junior Tayvian Johnson half a dozen each. Pils grabbed seven rebounds, one less than Motzel's game high. All of Johnson's game-high five assists came in the opening half. Hill dropped four dimes and had two steals.
Augustana shot .533 (32 of 60) from the floor and held North Park to a .313 (20 of 64) mark. The hosts also won the battle of the boards by a 49-to-30 margin and committed 11 turnovers to 13 for the visitors.
Saturday's win sets up a showdown between two top ten teams and the only two still undefeated in CCIW play. The second-ranked Vikings travel to Naperville, Illinois on Wednesday, January 14 to take on 10th-ranked North Central, which is also 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the league. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
