ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Elmhurst men's basketball  team battled second-ranked Augustana College to the wire before falling 58-56 to the Vikings.

Elmhurst slipped to 11-2 with the loss and 1-1 in the CCIW while Augustana improved to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW.
The back-and-forth contest featured 18 lead changes and eight ties, including 14 lead changes over the final 14 minutes of action.
The first half was sluggish for both squads as neither team shot higher than 36.0 percent from the floor in the game's opening 20 minutes. The two teams traded leads four times in the first 10 minutes before Augustana opened up three-point cushion after a Jawan Slaughter jumper. Elmhurst pulled to within a point after a pair of Bryant Ackerman free throws but the Vikings scored the next seven points to grab a 25-17 lead. A Kyle Wuest jumper just before the half cut Augustana's lead down to six (25-19) at halftime.
Elmhurst started quickly in the second, slicing the lead down to just one and surging in front after a pair of Brandon Schwebke free throws. The lead would change hands 14 times over the next 14 minutes as the two teams traded buckets. Elmhurst built a five-point lead with 7:45 left after Peyton Wyatt knocked down a jumper. Elmhurst held the lead until 4:28 left when Hunter Hill put the Vikings back in front with a bucket.

The Vikings' lead was short lived as Wuest buried a jumper to put Elmhurst back in front. A three-pointer from Dylan Sortillo gave the Vikings a 55-53 lead with 3:11 left on the clock, but  a three-point play from Ackerman gave the Bluejays the lead right back. Augustana pulled in front on a pair of free throws from Hill with 1:57 left to play. Elmhurst had a chance to take the lead with less than a minute to play, but Wuest's three-pointer from the wing rimmed out. After a Ben Ryan free throw gave the Vikings a two-point cushion with 28 seconds left on the clock, Wuest's layup was blocked by Slaughter out of bound. Wuest's potential game-tying jumper in the paint just before the horn was too strong, allowing the Vikings to escape with the victory.

Elmhurst outshot Augustana 40.4 percent (21-of-52) to 33.3 percent (19-of-57). The Bluejays hit 5-of-14 from downtown (35.7 percent) while the Vikings' struggled from long distance, hitting just 4-of-24 shots (16.7 percent).  Augustana went to the line 24 times, hitting 16 (66.7 percent) while Elmhurst hit 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the line. The Bluejays also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Augustana 40-36.

Wuest poured in a game-high 20 points to pace Elmhurst in the loss, shooting 8-of-19 from the floor. Ackermann added 10 points and four rebounds while Pat Coleman totaled seven points and five rebounds.

Sortillo came off the bench to spark the Vikings, scoring 16 points while shooting 6-of-12, including 4-of-8 from downtown. Hill added 13 points and four rebounds while Ryan totaled eight points in the win.

Elmhurst travels to Millikin University on Saturday, January 10.
