Wixted Becomes Devils' All-Time Scoring Leader

(Jamaica, N.Y.) – The #5-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team had a record-setting afternoon, improving to 10-1 on the season with an 83-71 over York College of New York.

 

Senior Gerry Wixted became the school's all-time leading scorer while junior Brandon Angradi tied the Centennial Conference record with a school-best 10 three-pointers in the game.

 

Senior Chris Cox put the Devils on the board first, opening the game with a dunk to start the year off with a bang.

 

Angradi added to the fireworks, dropping a trio of three-pointers before assisting Jon Stenger, who tacked on another to put Dickinson out in front, 18-6, at the 14 minute mark.

 

Cyril Reid answered for York, hitting a three-pointer to trigger a 9-1 run. Franklin Greene closed out the run with a three-pointer to make the score 19-15, with 11:20 remaining in the half.

 

Angradi buried two more three-pointers to counter the offensive surge by York, giving the Devils a 28-22 lead, with 8:24 to play.

 

Jaron Williams tipped-in his own miss and Reid buried a three to cut the lead to one. Wixted knocked-down a three-pointer, then converted a three-point play to give Dickinson a 34-27 advantage.

 

Cox hit a lay-up and Angradi dropped his sixth three-pointer of the half. First-year Justus Melton and Stenger combined to hit four free throws as the Devils started to pull away once again.

 

Angradi added number seven at the 2:01 mark for a 46-30 lead. The Devils went into the break, leading 48-33 as Chris McNeal tacked on a pair of free throws.

 

Angradi went 7-for-11 in the first half, all from beyond the arc, leading the way with 21 points. Wixted added 10 points, hitting 4-of-5 field-goals while controlling six rebounds.

 

York came out strong with a 9-0 run. Omar St. John scored and hit a free throw before Reid sank a pair of three-pointers to cut the deficit to 48-42. James Wolf added a tip-in to make it 48-46.

 

Wixted put the Devils on the board, hitting a pair of free throws. In the process, he became the program's all-time leading scorer with his 1,541st career point.

 

St. John and Wolf sandwiched lay-ups around a three-pointer from Ted Hinnenkamp for a 53-48, Dickinson lead. The Cardinals chipped the lead to three with a pair of free throws.

 

Steve Collins found the scoring column at the 13:27 mark before Angradi sank his eighth three-pointer of the afternoon for a 58-50 advantage.

 

St. John capitalized on a pair of fouls to cut the lead in half with four foul shots. He followed a Dickinson free throw from Robert Picka with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to a field-goal, 59-57, with 11:08 remaining in the game.

 

Melton and Cox led the Devils to a 69-61 lead. Melton stretched the lead to 71-63, and Angradi drained his ninth three-pointer to extend the lead to eleven, with 5:43 to play.

 

York kept battling, pulling within six at the 3:20 mark, 75-69. Angradi tied the Centennial Conference record with his 10th three-pointer of the game, and was fouled as well. He hit the free throw, giving him 32 points and the Devils a 79-69 lead, with just over two minutes remaining.

 

Melton scored off a rebound and added a pair of free throws down the stretch for the final of 83-71.

 

Wixted finished with 12 points, making him the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,541 points. He overtakes Nate Brought '98, who held the mark with 1,540. He added nine rebounds and four assists on the day as well.

 

Angradi tallied a career-high 32 points, tying the conference mark with a school record 10 three-pointers. The junior hit 10-of-16 on the day, shooting 63 percent from beyond the arc.

 

Melton reached a career-high as well, scoring 14 points behind a 10-for-12 performance from the free throw line. Hinnenkamp added nine points and Cox tallied six points and six rebounds. Collins chipped in with five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a pair of blocks.

 

St. John led York (8-4) with 21 points and five assists. Reid hit four three-pointers for 20 points.

 

The #5-ranked Red Devils improve to 10-1 on the season. They travel to Washington College on Wednesday night for a 6:00 pm tip-off with the Shoremen.
