UMHB men top Texas Lutheran

Seguin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball team will ring in the New Year with a four-game winning streak after the Cru used a frantic second-half comeback to post a 55-50 victory over Texas Lutheran University Wednesday in Seguin. The UMHB men improve to 6-3 on the season with the win in the final non-conference game of the season. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 5-6 on the year.

 

The Cru trailed by as many as 19 points in a dismal first half that saw UMHB shoot just 5-20 from the field. The Bulldogs held a 31-16 advantage at halftime. The Cru stormed back in the second half and tied the game at 43-43 on a Kevin Waller jumper with 6:23 left to play. TLU retook the lead on a three-pointer, but baskets by Daniel Mills and Layton Zinsmeister gave UMHB its first lead of the game at 47-46 with 4:35 remaining. The Bulldogs answered with a basket at the other end, but scored just two more points the rest of the way as Mills and Zinsmeister combined for the final ten Cru points of the contests to secure the win.

 

Mills scored a team-best 13 points on 4-8 shooting and he also had eight rebounds for the Cru. Zinsmeister added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists and Justin Gammill grabbed a team-high ten rebounds. UMHB shot 39 percent from the field in the second half and out rebounded TLU 48-34 in the victory.

 

Jordan Kouremetis had a game-high 15 points to lead the Bulldogs and Donte McGree added 11 points and ten rebounds. TLU shot just 25 percent from the field in the second half and turned the ball over 17 times.

 

Texas Lutheran is coached by former UMHB player and assistant coach Jimmy Smith. The Cru will return to action with a 3:00 PM American Southwest Conference home game against LeTourneau University on Saturday. UMHB will then host East Texas Baptist University for a 4:00 PM tip next Monday.
