Holmes' Double-Double Leads No. 22 R-MC past Baruch

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) recorded his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds as the No. 22 Randolph-Macon men's basketball team posted an 80-65 victory over Baruch Tuesday evening at Crenshaw Gymnasium on Day 2 of the R-MC Coaches Classic sponsored by Kay Jewelers.

Holmes was named the Classic's Most Outstanding Player as the Yellow Jackets (9-2) extended their win streak to six.

R-MC bolted to a 10-2 lead in the first five minutes and led by as many 12 in the first period, including a 39-27 advantage at intermission. Junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) led the victors in the first period with seven points.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first 13 points of the points of the second stanza to take a 52-27 lead with 16:30 left. The Bearcats (6-3) cut the deficit to 11 at 66-55 with six minutes left before R-MC hit seven of its final eight free throws over the final 2:30 to secure the 80-65 win.

Senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) had 11 points and Moore finished with 10 for the Yellow Jackets.

Chimaechi Ekekeugbor and Bryler Paige both had 15 points for Baruch.

Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had nine points, four assists and two steals for the Yellow Jackets and was named to the All-Classic Team, joining Granville Gittens of Baruch, Wyatt Smith of Salisbury and Kyle Keranen of Carroll.

Carroll downed Salisbury 57-47 in the day's first game.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, January 7, at 7 p.m. for a home ODAC contest against Bridgewater.
