LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- After a 20-day layoff for final exams and Christmas, the Covenant men's basketball team was back in action on Tuesday afternoon against Sewanee in non-conference play. The Scots suffered from their coldest shooting effort of the year as they dropped a 56-46 decision to the visiting Tigers.

Colton McGriff led Covenant (1-8) with 14 points and five rebounds but it was not enough to snap the Scots' losing streak which now stands at seven. 

Covenant connected on 27.1 percent (13-of-48) from the field for the game, but stayed in the contest thanks to a 17-of-23 effort from the foul line. The points and shooting percentage outputs are the lowest in a game this season.

The Scots got out to a 6-2 lead in the early minutes of the first half after a 3-pointer from Connor Sears and a conventional three-point play from McGriff with 15:46 left in the period. Sewanee would score the next 13 points, capped by a Leo Born 3-pointer, to grab a 15-6 lead. The Tigers never trailed again.

After trailing 25-19 at halftime, despite shooting 22.7 percent in the opening half, Covenant trimmed its deficit to 27-26 as Will Portlock converted a three-point play followed by two free throws. Sewanee pulled ahead 41-28 after a 14-2 run and the Scots would be unable to rally.

Sewanee (5-4) was led by Jorden Williams who scored a game-high 18 points, including five 3-pointers. Jacob McCullough added 10 points and five rebounds and Born chipped in seven points and a game-best six rebounds. The Tigers shot 45.7 percent (21-of-46) from the field and outrebounded the Scots 40-28.

McGriff was the lone player in double digits for Covenant. Portlock contributed seven points, four rebounds and two steals while TJ Cox scored six points.

Covenant forced 19 Sewanee turnovers, while turning the ball over just 12 times. That marks the eighth time this season the Scots have had a plus-advantage in the turnover category.

The Scots will begin USA South play in earnest this weekend. Covenant travels to Ferrum on Friday (5:30 p.m.) and Averett on Saturday (4 p.m.).
