WASHINGTON, D.C. – Matt McCarthy pumped in a game-high 23 points and Jonny Rice added a double-double in Guilford College's 87-80 basketball win over the University of Southern Maine Monday night.

Playing before a nice contingent of family and friends from his nearby hometown of Rockville, Maryland, McCarthy scored 20 of his 23 points in the second half, thanks to four-of-six three-point shooting. The senior guard hit three triples during a 22-11 Quakers' run midway through the second half. He capped the spurt with consecutive threes that gave Guilford a 73-58 edge with 9:31 left in regulation, its largest of the game.

Behind seven points from Brandon Littlefield and consecutive treys by Sean Caddigan, Southern Maine (3-6) answered with a 17-4 run to draw within 77-75 with 3:46 left. McCarthy iced the game from that point, scoring eight of the Quakers' final 10 points, including all six free-throw attempts.

Guilford's Rice added 15 points (12 in the second half) and a game-best 10 rebounds for his team-leading fourth double-double of the season. Will Freeman shot seven-for-11 from the floor and scored 14 points off the bench. Sophomore point guard Zachary Houston didn't score, but he did have a game-high six assists with no turnovers, plus six rebounds.

Littlefield's 18 points led four Huskies in double-figure scoring. Zach Leal had 13 points and Cole Libby added 12. Caddigan finished with 11 points and four assists.

The Quakers' (7-2) fourth win in five games sends them into Tuesday (12/30) night's final of the Catholic University/College Park Holiday Inn Classic versus the host Cardinals. Catholic knocked off York College of Pennsylvania, 87-68, earlier Monday night.
