(FRANKLIN, Ind.) – Four Saints reached double-figure scoring as the Thomas More College men's basketball team defeated Franklin College, 70-68, tonight (Wednesday, December 17, 2014) in a non-conference game at the Spurlock Center in Franklin, Indiana.
With the win, the Saints improve to 5-4 and with the loss, the Grizzlies fall to 0-9.
Thomas More raced out to a 10-3 lead when freshman forward Austin Young (Campbellsburg, Ky./Henry County) made one-of-two free-throws with 12:31 to play in the first half. Franklin answered with a 9-6 run to cut the lead to 16-12 with 7:51 to play in the opening half when Trae Washington made one-of-two free-throws. The Saints closed out the half on a 13-6 run to take a 29-18 lead at halftime when sophomore guard Drew Mays (Union, Ky./Ryle) made two free-throws with 1:25 to play in the half.
The Grizzlies opened the second half on a 19-4 run to take a 37-33 lead on a John Beineke lay-up with 13:14 to play in the second half. Thomas More responded with a 5-0 run to take a 38-37 lead with 12:04 to play in the game on two free-throws by Mays. Franklin used a 4-0 run to build a 41-38 lead with 10:17 to play in the game when Washington made a lay-up. The Saints came right back with a 22-9 run capped by two Mays' free-throws to take a 60-50 lead with 5:17 to play in the game. Franklin closed the game on an 18-10 run, but it wasn't enough as Thomas More won the game, 70-68.
Senior forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) led the team in scoring with 20 points. Joining him in double-figures was sophomore guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) with 15 points, Mays with 13 and freshman guard Daniel Williams (Louisville, Ky./Jeffersontown) with 11. Freshman center Louis Maniacci (Burlington, Ky./Cooper) led the team on the boards with six rebounds, while McGovney led the team in assists with seven and Mays led the team in steals with three.
Thomas More returns to action on Saturday (December 20) when it hosts across-the-river rival Mount St. Joseph University in the Bridge Shootout. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
