Mariners Drop Conference Game to Eagles

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy Men's Basketball (1-5, 0-2) fell to North Atlantic Conference opponent Husson University (4-1, 2-0) 91-70, on Saturday afternoon.

Brian Goda (Portsmouth, N.H.) led the Mariners with a double-double, highlighted by a career-high 15 points, and game-high 10 rebounds, off the bench. Freshman Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) also added 15 points, and two rebounds, while Nick Holt (Ellsworth, Maine) picked up 10 points and six rebounds. 

The Mariners scored first on a Kyle Boucher (Wayne, Maine) layup, and outscored the Eagles 10-9 in the first three minutes of play, but Husson slowly pulled away building a 57-34 lead to enter the half.

Maine Maritime came out strong in the second half, once again outscoring the Eagles in the first three minutes, 6-2. With that streak the Mariners closed the lead to 59-41, but could not fight back from the early deficit, despite outscoring the Eagles 36-34 in the second half.

Husson University was led by Trevon Butler who picked up 24 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Raheem Anderson added 14 points and four rebounds off the bench, while Jacob Moore recorded 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

The Mariners return to action next Tuesday when they will travel to Bowdoin College for a tough non-conference battle at 7:00 PM.
