GALLOWAY, N.J. – William Paterson (5-2, 3-1 NJAC) pressed No. 8 Richard Stockton (8-0, 3-0 NJAC) but couldn't come up with the upset, dropping a 53-45 men's basketball decision Dec. 6. Senior guard Sandy Burgos (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) led the Pioneers with 11 points and sophomore guard Turrell McClendon (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway Tech) had a game-best 15 rebounds.
WP finished on top of a back-and-forth first half, leading 22-21 after an opening 20 minutes that featured seven lead changes and four ties. Two baskets by junior forward Terik Bridgeman (Harlem, N.Y./Nia Prep) gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the game at 26-21 at the 18:42 mark of the second half, but a 12-1 Osprey run made it a 36-30 Stockton advantage with 10:58 left.
Two Burgos field goals and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Zach Frick (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) later handed William Paterson a one-point advantage (37-36, 8:56), but Stockton responded by scoring 10 of the next 12 points to take control of the contest (46-39, 4:14).
Bridgeman and Frick each scored eight points for WP. Junior guard Armin Cane paced Stockton with 17 tallies.
William Paterson will host Montclair State Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 8:00 p.m.
