Mount Saint Vincent Opens Skyline Play With Road Win At Farmingdale State

Farmingdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team ran its winning streak to open the season to four games on Tuesday night with a 78-60 road win at Farmingdale State to begin Skyline Conference play. Seniors James Zuccaro (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) combined for 50 points as the Dolphins beat the Rams for the first time in 21 all-time meetings.

 

Mount Saint Vincent played with the lead most of the night on Tuesday, allowing the Rams to hold the advantage for just 50 seconds in the contest. After the Dolphins pulled in front by seven on a Zuccaro layup with 13:17 to play in the first half, Farmingdale State put together an 11-2 spurt to take a 17-15 lead on a Marques Underwood bucket with 8:23 left in the period.

 

After allowing Farmingdale State to take the two point lead, its largest of the game, the Mount closed the half with 22 of the final 30 points to take a 37-25 lead into the intermission. The Dolphins used a 13-2 run capped by a three-point play from Johnson to take a 36-25 lead and got a pair of Johnson free-throws with 39 seconds left in the frame to take the 12 point halftime lead, it's largest of the half.

 

Zuccaro and Johnson each scored 11 points before halftime for the Dolphins to lead all scorers, combining for seven of the team's 12 made field goals. Zuccaro finished the half 4-for-7 from the floor with a three-pointer, six rebounds and three assists. Johnson rounded out the opening stanza 3-for-6 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line to go along with four boards and two helpers.

 

Mount Saint Vincent scored the only eight points off of the fast break in the first half and shot just over 41-percent from the floor. The Dolphins' defense held Farmingdale State to 26.3-percent shooting, including a 1-for-11 effort from three-point distance.

 

Coming out of halftime, Mount Saint Vincent ran its lead to 19 points with a 7-0 run over the first 2:01 of the second half. Johnson keyed the spurt with five points, including a three-pointer that put the Mount in front 44-25 with 17:59 left in regulation.

 

The Dolphins would not let the Rams closer than 12 points in the second half and put together an 18-8 stretch to take its largest lead of the game, 78-54, on a Jesse Regina (Staten Island, N.Y.) fast break conversion with just over two minutes left in the contest.

 

Although Farmingdale State shot 57.7-percent from the floor in the second half, Mount Saint Vincent converted on two more attempts overall and held the Rams without a three-pointer while connecting four times from bonus distance. The Dolphins turned nine Farmingdale State turnovers into 13 points in the second half and added 10 more tallies in transition.

 

Zuccaro closed the game 10-for-15 from the floor, knocking down a pair of three-pointers and five free-throws, on his way to a game-high 27 points. He rounded out a strong game with 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season to go along with four assists and four steals.

 

Johnson hit on eight of his 13 field goal attempts on his way to a season-high 23 points. He has scored in double-figures in each of the last three games for the Mount and finished Tuesday's tilt with five rebounds and four steals. Johnson also matched the game-high in assists with six.

 

Freshman Madison Martinez (Atlanta, Ga.) scored in double-figures for the second time in his career with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting, adding three rebounds and two assists. Kahlil Shorter (Staten Island, N.Y.) chipped in with five rebounds off the bench for the Dolphins on Tuesday.

 

Farmingdale State was paced by 21 points from Leland Williams, while Ruben Terrero added 11 points and six assists. Underwood led the team with nine rebounds and chipped in with seven points.

 

Overall, Mount Saint Vincent shot 46-percent from the floor and knocked down seven three-point field goals. The Dolphins held the Rams to 39.1-percent shooting and a 1-for-17 effort from three-point range. The Dolphins outscored Farmingdale State 18-4 on the fast break and scored 40 points in the paint.

 

At 4-0 overall on the season and 1-0 in Skyline Conference play, Mount Saint Vincent will return home for a non-conference tilt with St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Thursday night. Tip-off with the Bears is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

 

Games Notes: The Dolphins and Rams had met 20 times pervious to Tuesday's game since the start of the 2003-04 season with Farmingdale State winning all 20 contests…The closest final over that stretch was a 69-62 Farmingdale State win in 2009-10…The Dolphins are off to their best start since going 10-0 to begin the 2010-11 season.
