ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Phil Wenger's 11 points and six steals were not enough to overcoming a pin-point shooting performance by 21st-ranked Scranton in the first half of a 56-45 Landmark Conference defeat Saturday at Thompson Gymnasium.
The Royals soured E-town's Landmark debut by drilling 69.6% of its shots and going 7-of-9 from deep in the opening 20 minutes.
It wasn't just one player doing the damage, either. Nearly every guy that Scranton head coach Carl Danzig trotted onto the court came ready to shoot. Marcus Thomas buried three 3-pointers and Ross Danzig was 2-of-2 from beyond the arc as the Royals (3-1, 1-0 Landmark) grabbed a 41-26 halftime lead and never looked back.
Wenger's layup with 16:06 left in the half had the Jays (1-3, 0-1 Landmark) within 11-8, but on Scranton's next possession Kevin Doolan responded with a three to start a 14-7 run.
Elizabethtown outscored the Royals 28-24 in the second half, but could not trim the lead to closer than 11 at the final horn.
Though the visitors couldn't keep up their torrid pace in the second half, they still finished 24-of-42 for 57.1% and 10-of-17 from 3-point range. The Blue Jays, who got 10 points and five boards from Lee Eckert and nine points from Tyler Simpkiss, managed to shoot just 36.1% (22-of-61).
Justin Klingman quietly went about his business throughout the game, ending up with a game-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting (4-of-4 3FG). Danzig had 13 and Thomas, who didn't score in the second half, wound up with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Elizabethtown will try for its second win of the season Tuesday night as it travels to Wilkes for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
