(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College men's basketball team fell, 91-61, to third-ranked Augustana (Ill.) College tonight (Friday, November 21, 2014) on the first day of the Coach Jim Connor Classic at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-2 and with the win, the Vikings improve to 3-0.
Augustana jumped out to a 32-13 lead with 7:48 to play in the first half when Danielius Jurgutis made a jumper. Thomas More used a 5-0 run capped by a three-pointer by senior guard Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) to cut the lead to 32-18 with 7:06 to play in the first half. The Vikings closed out the half on a 17-7 run to take a 49-25 lead at halftime when Jake Gylten made a lay-up with 32-seconds to play in the half.
The Vikings opened the second half on a 14-4 run to increase the lead to 63-29 with 16:35 to play in the game when Kevin Schlitter made a lay-up. Thomas More answered with a 16-4 run to cut the lead to 67-45 when Mumford made one-of-two free-throws with 11:00 to play in the game. That would be as close as the Saints would come as Augustana closed out the game on a 24-16 run for the 91-61 victory.
Mumford led the Saints in scoring with 12 points, while senior guard Eliot Pipes (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) just missed double-figures with nine points. Mumford led the team on the boards with five, while sophomore guard Drew Mays (Union, Ky./Ryle) led the team in assists with three.
Thomas More closes out the Coach Connor Classic tomorrow as it plays Brescia University at 4 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center.
