Egzon Gjonbalaj’s Career-High 36 Points Leads Brooklyn Past NJCU, 88-73

Jersey City, NJ --- Junior guard/forward Egzon Gjonbalaj scored a career-high 36 points on 12-for-19 shooting from the field, including 3-for-8 from the three, and 9-for-12 from the free throw line, to help the Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team to a convincing 88-73 win over the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on Wednesday night at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

With the win, BC improves to 2-1 overall on the young season, while NJCU drops to 1-2 overall on the year.

Along with his 36 points, Gjonbalaj added six rebounds, three blocks, three steals and two assists to his impressive stat line. Senior Steven Diaz chipped in with 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from three, while classmate Jai Kellman contributed with 11 points. Junior Lorenzo Williams finished with 10 points, while senior Valon Djombalic recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with six assists.

For the Gothic Knights, Drew Marley scored a team-high 14 points, while Khalid Muhammad and Eddie Harris finished the night with 13 points and 11 points, respectively.

Following a layup from Muhammad that gave NJCU an early 6-2 advantage at the 16:35 mark of the first half, the Bulldogs scored 13 straight points to take a nine point lead, 15-6, with 12:47 left before the halftime break. BC's lead would never be threatened the rest of the half, as Brooklyn would lead by as many as 13 before taking a 12-point halftime cushion, 46-34.

The Gothic Knights would chip away at their deficit throughout the second half and would eventually cut Brooklyn's lead down to six, 58-52, on a three-pointer from Muhammad with 14:55 remaining in the game; however, the Bulldogs scored six straight to back up by 12, 64-52, with 13:02 left on the clock.

BC would eventually balloon its advantage to 21, 87-66, on a three-pointer from Diaz, with 4:02 remaining, en route to its 88-73 victory.

For the game, Brooklyn shot 44.8% (30-for-67) from the field, including 39.3% (11-for-28) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also shot 68.0% (17-for-25) from the charity stripe.

NJCU shot 42.3% (30-for-71) from the field and struggled from long distance, going 4-for-20 (20.0%) from three. The Gothic Knights also struggled from the free throw line, shooting 42.9% (9-for-21).

Brooklyn out-rebounded NJCU 45-39.

The Bulldogs return to action this Friday, November 21st, as BC will travel to Purchase, NY to participate in the Manhattanville College AJ Buchanan Classic. Brooklyn will take on host Manhattanville at 8:00 pm. The consolation and championship games are scheduled for the next day, Saturday, November 22nd at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, respectively. New York University and The Sages Colleges are the other two participating schools. Live stats will be available for the games.
