Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team picked up its second straight win to open the season on Tuesday night with an 82-60 non-conference win over visiting Vaughn. Five Dolphins scored in double-figures, led by 15 points from freshman Jamir Ferebee (Staten Island, N.Y.).
After falling behind twice in opening minutes on Tuesday, Mount Saint Vincent took its first lead of the game, breaking a 5-5 tie, on a Madison Martinez (Atlanta, Ga.) three-pointer at the 14:01 mark of the first half. The three point lead would be the Mount's largest of the half until an 11-0 spurt pushed the Dolphins in front 24-15 with just under six minutes to play before halftime.
Freshman Matthew Sowah (Staten Island, N.Y.) started the run with a three-pointer that pushed the Dolphins in front 16-15 and Ferebee scored six points in the stretch for the Dolphins who went 3-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-4 from three-point range to build the nine point lead.
Vaughn would rally with the next 10 points, including a pair of triples from Sergio Mejia, to take a 25-24 lead, but Mount Saint Vincent closed the first half with eight of the final 10 points to carry a 32-27 lead into the intermission.
Both team were held under 35-percent shooting in the first half, with the Mount going 10-for-33 from the floor and 4-for-13 from behind the arc. Ferebee came off the bench to lead the Dolphins in the first half with 10 points, while Mejia led all scorers at the break with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including three triples.
Coming out of halftime, Mount Saint Vincent built its lead to 20 points with a 22-7 spurt over the first 9:58 of the second half. The Dolphins held Vaughn to 3-for-11 shooting over that stretch and forced four turnovers. The Dolphins converted on nine of their 17 field goal chances and featured six different scorers over the run. Ammad Alkhulaidi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Mount with six points.
After stretching the lead to 20 points, the Dolphins would maintain a double-figure lead the rest of the night and took its largest lead of the game on a Jose Maestre (Bronx, N.Y.) conversion that moved the Mount in front 82-58 in the final minute.
Mount Saint Vincent rebounded to shoot better than 47-percent from the floor in the second half and outscored the Warriors 26-12 in the paint and 9-0 off of turnovers. Alkhulaidi scored 12 points after the break on 5-for-6 shooting and James Zuccaro (Gilbert, Ariz.) poured in 11 second half points.
Ferebee finished with a career-high 15 points on Tuesday, going 5-for-15 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. He added six rebounds and a pair of steals in the win. Alkhulaidi also posted a career-high in scoring with 14 points and recorded his second double-double in as many games with 12 rebounds. He handed out two assists and blocked three shots for the Mount.
Senior Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) tallied 10 points and handed out two assists in the game, while Martinez scored 12 points, going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and delivered three assists. Jesse Regina (Staten Island, N.Y.) matched his career-high in rebounds with eight on the night, including four on the offensive glass.
Vaughn was led by a game-high 19 points from Mejia and got 10 points from Maleec Taylor. The Warriors finished the game shooting 35.4-percent overall and 53.3-percent from the free-throw line.
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent shot just under 40-percent from the field and assisted on 17 of its 29 makes in the game. The Dolphins hauled in 18 offensive rebounds, leading to 15 second chance points in the game and turned 14 Vaughn turnovers into 16 points.
Tuesday's win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 2-0 overall on the season and gives it two straight wins to open the season for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign. Next up for the Dolphins in the first road test of the season when they travel to Penn State Altoona on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
