The New York University men's basketball team was defeated 64-62 by Union College in the 2014 NYU Tip-Off Tournament Championship Game on Sunday night, November 16, at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (1-1) were led by All-Tournament Team selection Evan Kupferberg, who poured in a game-high-tying 22 points to go along with a game-best 12 rebounds. The double-double was the junior co-captain's 10th of his career. Joining Kupferberg as an All-Tournament honoree is fellow junior forward Costis Gontikas. The Athens, Greece, native finished the contest with 12 points, eight rebounds and a career- and game-high four blocks. Gontikas also recorded two assists and two steals.
For Union (2-0), the Dutchmen were led by Tournament MVP William Hython (22 points, eight rebounds, two steals), who hit the game-winning layup with just two seconds remaining. He is joined as an All-Tournament selection by teammates Deshon Burgess (19 points, five assists, five rebounds) and Ryan Whelpley (six points, six steals, five rebounds, one block).
Rounding out the All-Tournament team is Kendal Jordan of John Jay College.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Ross Udine and Joe Timmes were the two other Violets to score in double-figures on the evening. Udine finished with 11 points and four assists, while Timmes chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
- NYU held the advantage in second-chance points, outscoring the Dutchmen 15-3.
The Violets will return to action next weekend when they travel to Purchase, NY, for the 17th Annual Manhattanville College Valiant Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 21-22. NYU will face the Sage Colleges on Friday at 6:00 pm, followed by a 1:00 pm or 3:00 pm game on Saturday against the winner of the Manhattanville vs. Brooklyn College matchup scheduled for 8:00 pm on Friday.
