Top-Ranked Warhawks Fall to Cardinal Stritch in Season Opener

The Warhawks shot 38% (20-52) from the field and 54% (23-42) from the free throw line. The Wolves were 50% (27-54) from the field and 50% (15-30) from the charity stripe. Cardinal Stritch won the rebound battle 45-34 including 14 on the offensive glass.

The Warhawks held the lead for the first ten minutes of the game going up by as much as six, 14-8, at the 11:12 mark. The Wolves remained close and tied it up 14-14 with 9:30 remaining. 

UW-Whitewater trailed for the first time since the opening bucket with 3:34 left in the first half and went into the locker rooms with a one point deficit, 32-31. 

Cardinal Stritch's first half was bolstered by 16 points from the bench and 20 in the paint. 

UW-Whitewater's Cody Odegaard led all scorers with 11 in the first 20 minutes off of 4-5 from the floor including 2-3 from behind the arc. Quardell Young added eight in the half.

The Wolves opened the second half with a 12-4 run to extend the lead to nine after a tip-in from Damian Stoneking with 14:24 remaining. 

The Warhawks responded with a 7-2 spurt to pull within four, 46-42, but CSU quickly pushed the lead back to eight, 50-42 with less than 10 minutes on the clock.

UW-Whitewater put together an 11-4 run to narrow the gap to one point, 54-53 after Young made the first of two free throws. Another big run, 9-2 for Cardinal Stritch put the Warhawks down eight, 63-55 with 3:41 left in the game. 

The Warhawks battled to within four with just 24 seconds remaining and pulled to within three with 10 seconds to go but the Wolves made their final two free throws to seal the game.

UW-Whitewater won the battle in the paint in the second half with 18 points compared to 10 for CSU. 

Young led all scorers with 22 points including 6-15 from the field and 10-13 from the free throw line. Odegaard registered 17 and KJ Evans added 13 along with posting a team high nine boards.

Tyler Semenas led the Wolves with 18 points. CSU's Magd Owayed led all players with 10 rebounds.

Prior to the start of the game, UW-Whitewater unveiled the 2014 national championship banner in Kachel Gymnasium honoring the 2013-14 squad with the program's fourth national title.
