HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College men's basketball team outscored La Roche (Pa.) 44-32 in the second half, en route to a 73-62 win in its season opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers are now 1-0 on the season, while the Redhawks drop to 0-1.
Junior J.J. Woodson (Cleveland/Bedford) led Hiram with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting. He also added six rebounds.
Freshman Kelvin Jones (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) had 10 points, while senior Josh Edmondson (Euclid/Twinsburg) finished with nine points and six rebounds.
La Roche was led by Ryan Frantz, who scored 21 points.
A layup by Woodson with 15:19 left in the first half gave the Terriers an early 7-2 lead.
The Redhawks would battle back to tie the score at 17-17, but Hiram responded with a 3-pointer from sophomore Kyle Deckerd (Louisville/Canton South), to jump back in front 20-17.
La Roche would take its first lead of the contest at 27-25 with 2:27 left in the first half. The Redhawks took a 30-29 lead into the break.
Hiram would come out of the half and went on a 19-4 run to open up its largest lead of the game at 49-34.
The Redhawks would trim the HC lead to 61-54, but a old-fashion 3-point play from Woodson would push Hiram's lead back to 64-54.
La Roche would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
The Terriers were 28-of-60 (46.7 percent) from the field and 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) in free throws. The Redhawks finished 24-of-49 (49.0 percent) in shooting and 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
Hiram held a slim 32-31 edge in rebounding and outscored La Roche 16-5 in second chance points.
Hiram will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts non-conference foe Otterbein in Price Gym at 7 p.m.
