NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 11, 2014) – Playing for the first time since 1961, in-state rival Vanderbilt defeated the Sewanee men's basketball team, Tuesday, 67-38 in front of 7,871 fans inside historic Memorial Gymnasium.
Both teams were cold out of the gate. Vanderbilt led 8-2 at the 15:39 mark. Out of the first media timeout, Sewanee settled in. A jumper by Jacob McCullough and a free throw by Seth Brown cut the Sewanee deficit to two, 9-7.
Unfortunately, over the next six minutes, Sewanee's offense slowed. The Tigers missed their next five shots. During that same stretch, Vanderbilt took advantage of its size and speed as guard Shelton Mitchell outraced the Tiger defense with a fast-break layup.
That would spark a 16-0 Commodore run over the next five and a half minutes.
Sewanee would finally end its drought, when sophomore Brody Stone made his first jumper of the evening. Sewanee would then cut the lead to 27-11, when McCullough hit his second jumper.
Vanderbilt would then close the half on a strong note, as Mitchell hit a three at the buzzer. That capped off a 21-4 Vanderbilt run the final 11:43.
Against the Commodores' size and athletic ability, Sewanee struggled from the floor making only 5-of-25 (20.0 percent) shots in the first 20 minutes. Vandy also struggled from the field the opening half. Even with the final two threes, the Commodores finished 12-for-32 (37.5 percent) from the field.
Out of the locker room, Sewanee opened with a three by sophomore Jorden Williams. Unfortunately, Vanderbilt responded with a quick 9-0 run to extend its lead to 25, 39-14.
Sewanee answered back as Seth Brown and Williams made back-to-back jumpers.
Sewanee would eventually cut its deficit to 19, 42-23, as Matt Tome hit a three with 13:11 to play.
Vanderbilt responded back with a 7-0 run over the next 1:30.
A three by Byron Turner cut the Vanderbilt lead to 27, 59-32, with 6:02 left.
From there, Sewanee would not close the gap to within 29.
Overall, Sewanee finished 16-of-56 from the floor. On the opposite side of the court, the Tiger defense played well. Sewanee limited Vanderbilt to a 41.4 field goal percentage.
Sewanee was only outrebounded by 16, 47-31.
Individually, Keshonn Carter led the Tigers with a team-high eight points. Stone and Williams also pitched in five points while Brown led Sewanee on the boards with seven rebounds.
Vanderbilt was paced by Damian Jones, who scored a game-high 14 points. Mitchell and Wade Baldwin IV were also in double figures with 10.
Sewanee opens its regular season with a 6:00 p.m. contest, Saturday against Huntingdon inside Juhan Gymnasium.
