St. Louis, Mo., March 8, 2014 – No. 24-ranked Calvin College forced 19 turnovers and withstood a late rally to post an 83-75 win over No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Saturday night at the WU Field House in St. Louis.

Jordan Brink had a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds for Calvin, who had a 24-13 advantage in points off turnovers in the win. Calvin won its ninth-straight game and improved to 24-5, while Washington U. ends its season with a 24-3 record and had its 19-game winning streak snapped. The Knights advance to the Sectional Semifinal to take on No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan Friday, March 14, at a site to be determined.

"We worked hard to get shots off tonight against Calvin," said Washington University head coach Mark Edwards. "The turnovers did not help our game plan, as those were 19 possessions we did not get a shot off. They were very effective and were the better team tonight."

Senior guard Alan Aboona had 26 points and hit seven threes in the loss, while senior forward Chris Klimek had 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Tim Cooney added 11 points and five assists. The Class of 2014 (Aboona, Cooney, Klimek, Will Patt and Jordan Rapp) compiled an overall record of 77-28 (.733) in four seasons on the Danforth Campus with three tournament appearances and three-straight University Athletic Association (UAA) titles (2012, 2013, 2014).

Washington U. shot 41.8 percent (28-67) from the field and hit 12-of-30 from the three-point range in the loss. The Bears outrebounded Calvin, 42-37, but struggled from the free-throw line hitting 7-of-17.

Calvin made its first four shots from the field and led 12-2 with 15:14 to play after a three-pointer by Austin Parks. The Knights kept Washington U. out of sync on offense early on as the Bears missed their first five shots from the field.

A three-pointer by Cooney with 14:56 to play cut the lead to 12-5. The three was the Bears' first bucket of the game. Cooney's second three of the half started a 9-0 run for Washington U. that cut the lead to 19-18. Aboona gave the Bears their first lead of the game (23-22) with 9:01 before half after a three from the wing.

Klimek, a second-team preseason All-America selection, picked up his third foul with 10:05 left after being issued a technical foul. Klimek went the bench for the final 10 minutes with three first-half points.

Jordan Brink led all scorers with 13 points in the first half as Calvin took the 39-34 lead to half. Austin Parks added 11, including a three from the wing with 42 seconds to play to put the Knights up five at half. Aboona and Cooney led had eight points for Washington U., who shot 48 percent (12-25) from the field. Calvin turned 10 WUSTL turnovers into 15 points in the first half.

Calvin took advantage of some cold shooting by the Bears to start the second half to get the lead into doubles figures (56-45) after a bucket by Tyler Kruis off on in-bound play with less than 12 minutes to play. Washington U. hit just 4-of-15 from the field to start the second half.

After another turnover on the offensive end by the Bears, Calvin's Mickey DeVries scored on an open layup to make it a 13-point deficit (58-45) forcing a timeout by Washington U. with 10:39 to play.

Calvin led by 14 with 6:32 to play before the Bears mounted their charge. Back-to-back buckets by Klimek cut the lead to eight (66-58), and then a four-point play by Aboona made it 66-62 with 4:36 left. Brink answered with his third three of the game on the ensuing play to get the lead back to seven.

"All year we had a mentality of never backing down and that is how we entered the game tonight," said Aboona. "Calvin was a tough team and they hit their shots and made their free throws."

Parks (18 points) and Jordan Daley (12) also scored in double figures for Calvin, who shot 51.7 percent (30-58) from the field in the win.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: Calvin has won both career meetings between the two teams … The 19-game winning streak was the third longest in school history … The Bears are 23-2 this season when outrebounding their opponent … Washington U. suffered its first loss of the season at home (15-1).
