Trio Leads Cabrini back to Second Round with 100-69 Win

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team wasted no time announcing its presence in the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, as the Cavaliers defeated Bridgewater State University 100-69 tonight at Nerney Field House in the first round of the tournament.  The victory improved the Blue and White to 26-1 and marks the fourth consecutive year the club has advanced to the second round.

The Cavaliers will face No. 22 Richard Stockton at 7:00 p.m. in Saturday's second round.  The Ospreys scored a 72-66 victory over Bowdoin College in Friday's first game. 

Tickets for the second round game will go on sale at 6:00 p.m. in the Dixon Center.

The trio of senior Fran Rafferty and juniors Vinny Walls and Aaron Walton-Moss led the Blue and White in a big way, totaling 73 points on a combined 27-39 shooting, including 9-14 from three point range.

Walls recorded a game-high 29 points, his seventh consecutive game with at least 25 points, in 27 minutes of action.  The junior hit 4-5 from deep and grabbed six boards.  Rafferty hit 5-9 from deep, en route to 23 points in 23 minutes.  Walton-Moss barely missed a triple-double, with 21 points, 14 rebounds and six assists in 27 minutes.

The Cavaliers scored the game first eight points and never looked back.  Cabrini led by 10 points less than four minutes into the game and by 20 with 9:35 left in the first half.  The trio of Rafferty, Walls and Walton-Moss scored 55 of Cabrini's 61 first half points.

The Blue and White led 61-34 at the break, after shooting 64.7% from the floor, including 5-11 from three point range.  Cabrini also outrebounded the Bears 26-13 before the break.
The Cavaliers showed no let-up in the second half, as they continued a high level of efficiency. The Blue and White hit 15-33 from the floor, including 6-14 from behind the three point line after the break.  

Cabrini held the Bears to just 33.8% shooting on the night.  Bridgewater State connected on just 5-29 from three point range, including 1-13 in the second half.   The Cavaliers also controlled the glass, outrebounding Bridgewater State 46-23.

Four Bears (16-12) scored in double figures, led by senior Brendan Monteiro with 14 points.  Junior Kyle Gibson added 13 points, while junior Michael Lofton and sophomore Tyler DeMelo tallied 10 points each.

Stockton (23-4) advanced to Saturday's second round action with a 72-66 win over Bowdoin College.  Senior Rich Suhr led the way with 21 points, connecting in five three pointers.  Junior Josh Blamon added 20 points and eight rebounds in the win.

The Ospreys took control of the action midway through the first half as it used an 11-0 run midway through the first half to open a 32-18 lead with 4:21 left in the opening stanza. Bowdoin closed the half on a 10-2 run, cutting its deficit to 34-28 at the half.

The second half played out much like the first.  Stockton tried to pull away before the Polar Bears hit a few threes to stay within reach.  The Osprey's built its lead to 54-43 with 11 minutes to play before an 8-0 Bowdoin run cut the lead back to three.  Bowdoin got no closer as Stockton hit 7-8 from the free throw line in the final 2:24.
