Oglethorpe Falls Just Short in SAA Championship, Loses 76-75 in Overtime

More news about: Oglethorpe

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team was just 30 seconds away from an SAA title Sunday in Danville, Ky., up 65-62 on host Centre. However, the Colonels hit a long three-pointer to tie it up and send it into overtime, where they went on to take their second straight SAA title, 76-75.

The Stormy Petrels came back from being down by 14 points, 35-21, with 4:38 remaining in the first half and took the fight to the Colonels, who were playing on their home floor, in the second half. They finished the first half on an 11-4 run to pull to within seven points, 39-32, at the break.

In the second half, the Petrels and Colonels traded baskets for much of the period, as Oglethorpe couldn't seem to quite get over the hump, trailing by as many as five points, up until the 4:25 mark. At that point, they finally tied the game on a jumper from junior guard Alex Davis, 58-58. Senior guard Tyler Courson followed with a three-pointer a minute later, and the Stormy Petrels had their first lead of the game, 61-60. After Centre tied the game again, the Petrels retook the lead on a layup from freshman guard Romello Bates with 2:34 left. They then extended their advantage to three points when Davis hit back-to-back free throws. The Petrels had a 65-62 lead with 30 seconds remaining.

However, with the Petrels just one stop away from a probable SAA championship, Centre hit a 27-foot three-pointer with 19 seconds left to tie the game, 65-65. The Petrels could not convert at the other end and the game went to overtime.

Given new life, Centre took control early in the extra period. They built a six-point lead, 71-65, with 1:55 on the clock. The Petrels again refused to give in. A Courson three-pointer cut the deficit to three, 73-70, with 58 seconds left. After two Colonel free throws pushed the lead back out to five, Courson again converted to make it 73-70 with 19 seconds left. However, time started to run out on the Petrels, and when Centre pushed the lead out to 74-70 with eight seconds left, the Petrels were behind the eight-ball. They scored to cut the deficit to 74-72, but there were just three seconds left. Two made free throws at the other end sealed the victory for Centre.

In what's likely to be his final collegiate game, Courson did all he could to push the Petrels toward an SAA championship. He poured in 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 5-of-8 three-point shooting. He also grabbed seven rebounds and two steals. Davis finished with 17 points and six assists. He went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Junior center Jordan Kinney scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. Bates scored 12 points and went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.

Centre outshot the Petrels 53-to-41 percent from the field and 83-to-67 percent from the free-throw line. The Petrels shot 44 percent from three-point range to Centre's 41 percent.

The Petrels now finish the season with a 21-7 mark. Twenty-one wins is a new record in modern program history. The team will now wait to see if they can get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. However, due to the Petrels' seven losses and strength-of-schedule considerations, it's looking like they may come up just short of a spot in the national tournament. The field for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Monday.
